This is spain, just enjoy a traditional local place

Nothing fancy about this place, you will find this kind of bar / restaurant a lot in the cities, away from all te tourist traps. When you see the menu it always amazes me what they can prepare in a small kitchen behind the bar. wide range of selections for both meat and fish. And the best of it... read more

Starters of mixed meats was a large plate of mixed cured charcuterie with a tomato and some salad in mayonnaise. Progress to a mixed fish grill of mussels, langoustines, salmon, monkfish and two other white fish. Excellent valid though completely lacking accompaniments unless you count the olive oil and garlic. As said very good value but a few side vegetables... More

Had tapas here sunday evening. Pretty good, looks like a local hangout. Decided to try dinner the following night. Not so good. Everything was pan fried and looked a bit sad. The spanish couple next to us sent their meals back twice. Quite a pleasant interior and external tables, but if you book you can do much better in the... More

a traditional place -- the salmon was the best either of us had ever tasted and the broiled calamari was amazing. The mixed salad was huge and wonderful. Tons of olives. The roasted veggie appetizer was a bit oily but I loved that... others might not. Did I mention the tons of olives? We were stuffed and skipped dessert but... More

We popped into this restaurant as it was very near our Best Western Dante hotel and enjoyed our experience. It is a very small place where locals come to eat. We started with Iberian ham and had veal steak and sole for the main course with a nice Rioja. Everything was perfectly cooked and it had a nice, cosy atmosphere.

After a full day of walking we were returning to our hotel looking for a restaurant. After passing on several other places we decided to stop here after talking with the waitress. We sat inside which is small however they have an upstairs dining room. The decor is interesting with mounted stag and boar's head and hanging legs of Iberian... More

Since we stayed in a hotel nearby, it was a great surprise. Fabulous! We strongly recommend it. Enjoy!

After a rather disappointing visit to the highly rated Tapas 24, we tried Els Barrils close to our Hotel Center Barcelona. We had a great time, dining on grilled eggplant, grilled sardines and grilled squid. A very friendly and helpful waitress guided us through the menu and was most attentive to our needs. OK, we had to have the most... More

Stumbled on Els Barrils while looking for a local tapas place to dine. Waitress was great and suggested a couple of plates. Aside from the standard and most excellent I iberico jamon plate, we had grilled sardines and grilled squid. Both were done to perfection. Add to that the recommended bottle of red wine and some grilled eggplants - we... More

I'm glad that I have tried other tapas restaurants/bars in the city prior to writing this review. Els Barrils was first taste of local tapas in Barcelona and after a 24 hours travel and airline meal, this change was most welcomed. The few dishes we ordered were simple, fresh and "déjà vu" type of tapas food like grilled sardines or... More

Staying in Eixample

Neighborhood Profile
Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognizable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognized architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.
