A pleasant dinner

I was looking for one of my favorite restaurants from previous visits. It was closed. So I was on my own, without a guide. I was near Las Ramblas. This makes finding a decent restaurant a bit more difficult as the majority are set up for tourists. El Gran Cafe was the first restaurant with table... read more

We made a reservation here last minute and were pleasantly surprised. The room is large and had a piano player up on a mezzanine level who was very good. The service was great and the food was very well prepared. Try the paella!

We did't know about this restaurant on front, we just walk'd around the small streets outside Ramblas - and then this Pearl of an old style restaurant was appering. You can't ask for better service when you coming to a restaurant, the straff was wery polite and service minded. They have an exelent piano entertainer - not to loud, just... More

After visiting the Maritime museum and enjoying a cruise around the harbour it was time to find a nice restaurant for a leisurely lunch.Louis and I walked up the cobble streets through the old town and discovered El Grand Cafe Restaurant. It is a very elegant venue and obviously used for business luncheon, but the besuited patrons were quite acceptable with the... The place itself is lovely to look at but the food does not meet the standard. It was just ok. The plates and the food were cold which is not what you expect for these prices! They didn't have the wine we wanted and happy to give us one which was much more expensive! Wouldn't visit again when you have... More

The setting, interior decor and ambiance is wonderful with its white table cloths etc. It looks like it will be great. They did try hard but they just do not have the detail correct. Service a little slow, cold plates for hot food.

We revisited El Gran Café when we returned to Barcelona in January 2015. The restaurant is a fabulous setting in true Barcelona style but the food was not up to the expected standard. Steaks and fish were so below standard. As tourist fare it was just about ok. Service was good but the whole experience was a bit tired. What... More

Reviewed El Gran Café before with glowing comments, and been a fair few times over the years. This time something was missing, mainly down to a (more limited?) menu which over-reached itself so far as descriptions were concerned. All four of us agreed the food was somewhat bland, although well presented with good service.... but El Gran Café has always... More

Given the stunning building and higher prices we had high expectations for this restaurant. I would class it as a safe choice for fairly good food and wine, but indifferent service and continual piano music.
