Unforgettable meal

Two years ago, this restaurant received my up-and-coming, but gimmicky also-ran, rating among the great restaurants of San Sebastian. Now it's at the top of the top. Not because it became more gimmicky, but rather because it took a necessary half-step back toward classic Basque cuisine; Still on the menu is the turn-you-off-at-the-onset faux-hand-sanitizer-and-mouthwash first course (of 12+). But you... More

We dined here for dinner. I must say Madam was a little frosty in her welcome inquiring whether we has a reservation. I almost thought of saying no to see her reaction but decided against it. I thought it was a tad rushed when the waiter wanted the food order yet we had not been offered any suggestions on wine... More

One of the best things I ate in 2014 was at this restaurant. It's was a surprise buried under many leaves - each dressed separately to bring forth their ultimate individual flavour. That might sound pretentious but it's not. It's done with a combination of high art and humour and that's what I love the most about Akelare. Akelare is... More

I believe the statistic is that there is a higher density of Michelin stars in the Spanish Basque country than anywhere else in the world so there is plenty of choice when it comes to choosing a high-end restaurant. In San Sebastian itself there is only one other 3-star Michelin restaurant, Arzak. The other, Martin Berasategui, is in Lasarte a... More

Before you die.... Definitely,This is the place where angels show you the way. This is a unique food, it's not possible to describe. You must let that Mr Pedro Subijana and his team show how the Spanish food is in the top of the mountain.

I have recently begun reviewing on Trip Advisor after having checked it for other traveller reviews. I value the comments made by other diners, it has helped me make choices on several occasions. Some years ago I went to Akelarre for lunch and was first of all " Wowed " by the views and setting. Although it is expensive, it... More

Went for dinner this summer wtih my wife and two children (9 and 12). Everything was perfect from start to finish. We were a bit anxious about what they were going to serve our children but that was a non-issue. They were happy to prepare just about anything for the kids. They wanted beef so the chef prepared a lovely... More

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Rioja was the meal we had at the 3 star Akelaŕe, which is about 10 KM from San Sebastian on a bluff overlooking Biscay Bay. It opens at 8:30 in the evening, and its view of sunset is supposed to be breathtaking. On this particular day, sunset was at 8:26. We... More
