I have recently begun reviewing on Trip Advisor after having checked it for other traveller reviews. I value the comments made by other diners, it has helped me make choices on several occasions. Some years ago I went to Akelarre for lunch and was first of all " Wowed " by the views and setting. Although it is expensive, it... More

Went for dinner this summer wtih my wife and two children (9 and 12). Everything was perfect from start to finish. We were a bit anxious about what they were going to serve our children but that was a non-issue. They were happy to prepare just about anything for the kids. They wanted beef so the chef prepared a lovely... More

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Rioja was the meal we had at the 3 star Akelaŕe, which is about 10 KM from San Sebastian on a bluff overlooking Biscay Bay. It opens at 8:30 in the evening, and its view of sunset is supposed to be breathtaking. On this particular day, sunset was at 8:26. We... More

As a location is the best location in Donostia. Donostia is the basque name for San Sebastian, mention this name to the locals and you will gain points. It has a view to all S.Sebastian. When the food is excellent the view really helps. It is a round restaurant with very comfortable tables and two tasting menus and an a... More

Enjoy some of the finest food in the world with amazing views of the Bay of Biscay. A romantic setting that will put you in the good books for weeks. The short taxi ride out of San Sebastian is well worth it. Everything about this restaurant is first class.

We had three set menus to choose from and we did not have to choose the same menu. To get here you'll have to take a taxi because the restaurant is located at the... More

I suppose the standard of food presented at high end restaurants could be classified as art so to critique it is very subjective. The food component, albeit a very significant component is only one aspect to be considered when assessing the overall dining experience. From the moment we were greeted at the front door until we were escorted to our... More

I don't think I've ever tasted food quite like this--an intriguing blend of tradition and avant-garde, with some concentrated flavors and intricate counterpoints. A nice feature is that it's possible to order half portions of anything, and any item from any tasting menu can also be had a la carte (I wish the server had told us this earlier--we would... More

Akelare was one of the most expensive meals of our lives, but well worth it. Dinner was a well orchestrated event involving various wait staff, sommeliers, and hosts, whose sole purpose was to make our dining experience as pleasurable as possible. The meal took 4 hours to serve, with every course perfectly timed to arrive at our table fresh. My... More

Akelare is one of several amazing restaurants in San Sebastián and a must for all that enjoy great food with a touch of innovation. I have had the opportunity to dine at other 3 Michelin star restaurants so will use those as comparators in this review. The place The restaurant has a modern and minimalistic decor. There are large windows...and... More
