The restaurant is situated at a very picturesque place up in the hills, so the view was fascinating especially during sunset. Service was precise and discreet yet humorous. We were very excited to go to a 3star restaurant in the Basque Country as this is one of the most creative and prolific regions in the world. Akelare was the 3*. Was the food good. Of course it was. Service and location are nice, especially if you arrive at sunset and get a table with a view - not... More

The beans and chorizo were stunning, So simple yet so welcome after a big lunch only a few hours before. The dessert was also one of the best ever.

Based on the reviews and a three star michelin rating I had much bigger expectations. Food was good but nothing mind blowing. Regular signature tasting menu (you have a choice if three). Wine list is also OK. The service can be better, even though they were friendly and tried their best, we had to wait for a check for more... More

We've been to a few of the world's top-rated restaurants, and more often than not have been a little disappointed. Sometimes they're stuffy and sometimes the food is too fancy, or is a way to show off, but doesn't taste great. This place, where we went a couple weeks ago for my wife's birthday, is different. It's casual in a... More

Very inventive and creative dishes, the foie and the leaves being one of my favourites. There were a few dishes we weren't as impressed by but overall the food was outstanding. Fantastic view of the sunset out to sea, you should definitely ask for a table by the window. Incredibly long and reasonably priced wine list. The staff were very... More

This was fine dining at its best. Each and every one of the 3 Michelin stars are well deserved. We had booked for 8:30pm, but arrived a bit early, to find that they are serious about timing - the doors were locked! However, it gave us an opportunity to walk around outside and enjoy the great view of the Atlantic,... More

We had a wonderful dinner at Akelare. The welcome was professional, but not particularly warm. The dining room is simply decorated, with an updated classic feel. The floor to ceiling glass windows are the focal point of the room, though it was overcast on the evening we were there (nothing they can do about that!). Service was mixed. Our main... More

Each dish was beautifully and intricately prepared, bringing out a curiosity and surprise for the diner, appealing to sight, smell, taste and inspiration. While the ingredients and preparation was very refined and even exotic, the flavors were all very pleasing and complementary, not strange or experimental. Even the intense flavors such as the apple dessert were very authentic (ie. so... More

We had an absolutely perfect lunch here - easily the best meal of our trip to Europe. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for - stunning views, excellent service and amazing food. We enjoyed being able to order two different tasting menus and share them - we ordered the two modern menus and we couldn't have been happier.
