From the arrival at this understated modernist archectually designed car park to the glimpses of breathtaking views across the Atlantic between the clipped hedges, you just know you're up for something special. We were first to be seated for Sunday lunch on a perfect, sunny calm day with views that were so vast you could see the curve of the... More

I will add to this later.. wonderful, and I have pictures. We were there at dinner so we did NOT get to enjoy the view of the bay from the restaurant, the pacing was wonderful, the wine was delicious and perfectly paired and the food was one bite of delicious after the other.

Having had amazing meals here in years past, we were looking forward to another experience of intense flavors and mystifyingly good food. The mystifying part was all that we experienced. Course after course of interesting looking things on a plate, little of which looked liked food, and little of which had much flavor. We love molecular gastronomy, but several of... More

We went to this place because it was recommended by the Michelin guide as a 3 stars restaurant. Usually that is a guarantee of great food and outstanding service. Unfortunately on this case they delivered very short on what they promise. We had one of the degustation menus and it started interesting with an exciting presentation but flavor was weak.... More

I was so looking forward to this experience. What a disappointment. The whole thing felt dated and pretentious. The food was not even appetizing. The servers were fussy and condescending. Each dish was presented as if it was the be all and end all and it wasn't. The chef hovered around the cash register instead of being in the kitchen.... More

As going to a 3 star restaurant is not something you do everyday (at least you shouldn't) it's natural that you have high expectations when going to one.. Having read some reviews before booking and by the look of the car park and entrance when we arrived, my wife and I we felt that we were up to a really... More

We celebrated my 50th Birthday here on a trip to San Sebastian recently and would like to thank everyone at Akelare for making it memorable for us. Beautiful location with amazing views of the Biscay. The staff were welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. We had the tasting menus and can only say they were absolutely superb ! All dishes... More

If you're looking at this review then I'm a little jealous as it means you're going to / in San-Sebasian / Donostia. On the whole, the food-whatever the level/price-in this part of the world is excellent. Enjoy! At Akelare the price is at the upper end but the quality is excellent and the food inventive. In some restaurants of this... More

I hesitate to write this review, as I do not believe it is the intent of the owner/chef to rip off people. But at 300€ a person, I feel compelled to warn others. Food: you are given a choice of three different tasting menus (max two per table) or a la carte (I believe most go with the former). The... More
