Etxanobe restaurant is amazingly sited above Bilbaos second iconic building, the gleaming Palacio Euskalduna. Etxanobe is one of the hottest dining spots in the world right now, drawing breathless reviews from food-writers and food-lovers for the grand cuisine of chef/owner Fernando Canales. The post-modern dcor of the two dining rooms one of them available for private hire features a fabulous ruched fabric ceiling, wittily skirted lighting, white linens and seating, and unforgettable views over the estuary and the Guggenheim from the terrace. Light pours in everywhere. Innovation is on display in every mouthful that emerges from Canales kitchen. Theres no menu of the day; you choose a la carte or a series of tasters. Dishes change monthly and may include deceptively simple descriptions like starter of lasagne of anchovies, main course of sole with pil-pil sauce and trout eggs, and home made dessert of cinnamon and rice puff-pastry with milk, though youd be mad to miss the little chocolate bombs. The wines are excellent and the service is a mission unto itself in a word, sublime.

After a number of tasting menus, decided to try out this highly rated restaurant. Sat inside with lovely city views. Food was good without rising to the levels experienced elsewhere. Lipstick amuse was a bit over the top for us. Highlight was the orange cream in liquid nitrogen at the end. Waitress explained all the dishes well and was friendly.... More

Great service, perfect environment, but a lot of the food wasn't tasty, even if the ambition by the chef was. We took the expensive chef-meny - take something that you like instead. 120 € per person, not worth it.

Do not miss this wonderful restaurant. The staff are charming and made us most welcome. We had the Chef Tasting Menu of two appetisers and ten small courses which was an excellent choice and fairly priced. The tasting wine selection was also very good and good value. Every dish was perfectly cooked. If there has to be a highlight it... More

The chef and staff here are well intentioned so I hate to write such a negative review. In summary, they have focused on novel presentations such as a sardine flavored lipstick served in a lipstick case for flavorful, well prepared food. Not one course was edible. I ordered a fish and clam stew that had about 6 clams, a few... More

We went to Bilbao mainly to see the Guggenheim. After eating at many good restaurants in Barcelona, we did not expect much. However this restaurant was the best one during our recent Spain trip. The decoration and setup were very good. There were seats inside and outside. We took our seats in the outside for the view and nice breeze.... More

Went for the Chef's tasting menu with wine selection as a birthday treat. At 88euro for the tasting menu and 18euro for the recommended wine accompaniments, this is not budget dining but it is the most amazing experience. 10 small portions of the most delicious food, presented in interesting and amusing ways that just made every course better than the... We have just 2 nights here in Bilbao this time, and we needed to choose something special for our last extraordinary meal here in Spain.Bilbao spoils you for choice with resturants and food. Some of the best there is, in my opinion. So my pick was Extanobe, and it lived up to all its reviews and our high expectations. We... More

There are many food experiences which leave you both satisfied and smiling. Rare are those that have you shaking your head in astonishment and feeling like you've bore witness to true culinary mastery. The 10-dish chef's tasting menu at Etxanobe is one such experience. Recommended to me by a local tour guide with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Bilbao, Etxanobe is... More

We had the chef's menu. 10 small portions of the specialties of the chef. Everything was delicious, sometimes food came to fast. We asked to slow down and that was done. The special anjovies lasagne was the best, tuna and scallops, loved it! The wine with the courses were local wines and were lovely, great value for the winepairing. We... More
