Etxanobe restaurant is amazingly sited above Bilbaos second iconic building, the gleaming Palacio Euskalduna. Etxanobe is one of the hottest dining spots in the world right now, drawing breathless reviews from food-writers and food-lovers for the grand cuisine of chef/owner Fernando Canales. The post-modern dcor of the two dining rooms one of them available for private hire features a fabulous ruched fabric ceiling, wittily skirted lighting, white linens and seating, and unforgettable views over the estuary and the Guggenheim from the terrace. Light pours in everywhere. Innovation is on display in every mouthful that emerges from Canales kitchen. Theres no menu of the day; you choose a la carte or a series of tasters. Dishes change monthly and may include deceptively simple descriptions like starter of lasagne of anchovies, main course of sole with pil-pil sauce and trout eggs, and home made dessert of cinnamon and rice puff-pastry with milk, though youd be mad to miss the little chocolate bombs. The wines are excellent and the service is a mission unto itself in a word, sublime.

I felt that we didn't get the same level of attention at Etxanobe as we would at other fine dining restaurants. There was little explanation from the waiting staff when the dishes were brought, and when we had a complaint, we weren't heard out properly, we were simply dealt with. Everything was... read more

We went for the dinner to that amazing place in Bilbao. I didn't expected such a perfect food and attention of the chef. I am vegetarian. I didn't find a lot of proper food for me in the menu. But the chef Fernando Canales suggested for me to cook special vegetarian dishes and i even didn't know what it will... More

We decided to splash out on the tasting menu together with the wine pairing. Fortunately we had arrived at 200 hrs when it opened because by 2130 the place was full. The food was delicious as was the wine. Even though we didn't wait long between courses it still took nearly 2. 5 hours to complete the meal. The desert... More

What we liked about this restaurant was that the experimentation and creation of some very nice dishes. The menu though was not consistent in it's creation of very traditional and innovative dishes, but nevertheless ambitious. The setting is spectacular on top of the Palacio Euskalduna.

The food was of good quality and many dishes technically impressive, but some of them were not well balanced. It seemed like the focus was more on the presentation of the food than its taste. The view from the terrace is also overrated in my opinion. Bottom line: it was enjoyable, but I did not find it good value for... More

This was an excellent dining experience. We were graciously greeted by the owner and chef from the moment we walked in the door, which set the tone for the entire evening. We opted for the tasting menu, and my bf added the wine pairing - something I soon regretted, as we saw how well each wine enhanced the flavors of... More

There are many places to eat in Bilbao but this is a one star Michelin restaurant that you simply must eat in. Elegant dining room where you can eat inside or outside on the balcony over looking the river. Chef owner greets all guests when they arrive which is a nice personal touch. We had the tasting menu 8/9 courses)... More

Wonderful meal on the terrace. Food great and Fernando charming. Arrive before 20.30 to have the best choice of tables.

Absolutely amazing night, on arrival we were met by the owner and chef Fernando he personally showed us to our table little did I know then what a culinary treat we were in for. The food was fantastic, tender grilled octopus, followed by a dish called kokotxas grilled hake. The service was top class you are treated as if you're... More

It goes without saying that the food at this Michelin 1-star restaurant is excellent. My criticism would be that it is a bit more expensive than it ought to be and the experience is designed with a bit too much "performance art" in mind as opposed to quietly experiencing superb culinary artistry. I refer to the final course of the... More
