Etxanobe restaurant is amazingly sited above Bilbaos second iconic building, the gleaming Palacio Euskalduna. Etxanobe is one of the hottest dining spots in the world right now, drawing breathless reviews from food-writers and food-lovers for the grand cuisine of chef/owner Fernando Canales. The post-modern dcor of the two dining rooms one of them available for private hire features a fabulous ruched fabric ceiling, wittily skirted lighting, white linens and seating, and unforgettable views over the estuary and the Guggenheim from the terrace. Light pours in everywhere. Innovation is on display in every mouthful that emerges from Canales kitchen. Theres no menu of the day; you choose a la carte or a series of tasters. Dishes change monthly and may include deceptively simple descriptions like starter of lasagne of anchovies, main course of sole with pil-pil sauce and trout eggs, and home made dessert of cinnamon and rice puff-pastry with milk, though youd be mad to miss the little chocolate bombs. The wines are excellent and the service is a mission unto itself in a word, sublime.

One of the Top Five Meals of My Life

I feel that this meal compared to the French Laundry in Napa. The dishes were brilliantly creative and Fernando Canales, himself, spent generous amounts of time at our table (and others') explaining his creations.

Said to be top class; however, the waiters were snobbish and the timing sucked. We had the wine for the food to late to enjoy it along with the food. The food it self was good but the service and timing ruined a good evening.

this restaurant was well situated in Bilbao. It was a hot evening so we had dinner on the terrace. The food was excellent. Especially the Fish lipstick starter. The rest of the dinner was excellent too.

Ordered the chef's menu of ~8 dishes. Everything was well-thought out, made with modernist techniques with a touch of Basque style. Our table of two booked this restaurant thinking it would be difficult to get in same day, but the contrary was true. Because of the paucity of folks eating here, we were granted a window seat with a wonderful... More

On a recent visit to Bilbao we ate in Etxanobe. We were greeted by the extremely friendly and modest owner/head chef Fernando before the meal. He talked us through all of the food options (which are cleverly accessible through the menu iPads) and took time to talk us through all the local wines that would go with our meal. Our... More

I ate dinner at Etxanobe one night in mid-May, ordering the chef’s menu with wine pairings. I thought the dishes thoughtful and creative, and I thought the wine selections complimented the dishes quite nicely. I appreciated that the chef, Fernando, took time to stop at my table to welcome me and share his culinary vision. As one simple example, he... More

We thought this might be a special place to celebrate a birthday & it proved to be exactly that! Everything was perfect, from the welcome, the ambience, the careful attention of the staff & of course the food. Heavenly! Beautifully prepared & presented, we enjoyed every exquisite taste. Surely it merits a Michelin star? A very special night.

After a number of tasting menus, decided to try out this highly rated restaurant. Sat inside with lovely city views. Food was good without rising to the levels experienced elsewhere. Lipstick amuse was a bit over the top for us. Highlight was the orange cream in liquid nitrogen at the end. Waitress explained all the dishes well and was friendly.... More

A foodie visit to Bilbao is often a case of having too many options to consider, yet not enough time to experience everything on offer. With a limited number of evenings on our weekend trip, and an array of Michelin star restaurants of noteworthy quality, the choice of where to dine really wasn't a job for the faint hearted. There... Great service, perfect environment, but a lot of the food wasn't tasty, even if the ambition by the chef was. We took the expensive chef-meny - take something that you like instead. 120 € per person, not worth it.
