Etxanobe restaurant is amazingly sited above Bilbaos second iconic building, the gleaming Palacio Euskalduna. Etxanobe is one of the hottest dining spots in the world right now, drawing breathless reviews from food-writers and food-lovers for the grand cuisine of chef/owner Fernando Canales. The post-modern dcor of the two dining rooms one of them available for private hire features a fabulous ruched fabric ceiling, wittily skirted lighting, white linens and seating, and unforgettable views over the estuary and the Guggenheim from the terrace. Light pours in everywhere. Innovation is on display in every mouthful that emerges from Canales kitchen. Theres no menu of the day; you choose a la carte or a series of tasters. Dishes change monthly and may include deceptively simple descriptions like starter of lasagne of anchovies, main course of sole with pil-pil sauce and trout eggs, and home made dessert of cinnamon and rice puff-pastry with milk, though youd be mad to miss the little chocolate bombs. The wines are excellent and the service is a mission unto itself in a word, sublime.

It was one of the best meals I have ever had. Starting from our waitress that was a very nice and attentive lady, always willing to explain the dishes and checking whether it was all as we wanted and the chef, that came to greet us at first and to check on us latter, to the food, that was absolutely... We've eaten in a number of Michelin star restaurants and are often disappointed and in fact puzzled why they got the star. Often nothing special, and doesn't match up to some cheaper restaurants in the same city. Etxanope is an exception. The food was consistently delicious, the staff gracious, and the experience really noteworthy. If you're seeking a Michelin star... More

I asked the chef, Fernando Canales, about his philosophy. He replied that he wanted to provide us with something memorable. So I have waited a few weeks to write this review, to see whether our first impressions persisted. Yes, they have. Extxanobe made a very favorable impression on these American visitors. We would love to return. Hence this review, in... More

I went here for lunch yesterday, 12th feb. I was the only diner so the service was very attentive but the waiter was very enthusiastic about the dishes explaining the components and cooking style. Even though I only requested starter and main they brought an additional 5 appetizers to try. The almond dish in partiucular was amazing. The stand out... More

The degustation menu is just delightful. Full of surpises and flavours. I value creativity in a restaurant. Great wine selection and also very good service.

We dined at this restaurant just before Xmas (23/12) with a party of 6 for a birthday. It met all our expectations. The service was casual and the waiter allocated to our table very friendly, attentive and informative about the food and wine. We made a gluten free, vegetarian request for one of our diners and this was attended to... More

If this restaurant was anywhere else but bizkaia it would have atleast two Michelin stars. It really is that good. Unfortunately for Etxanobe the Basque country is filled with excellent restaurants. If your looking for fine dining without it being crazy expensive then this really is the best you will get. I have been twice to this restaurant and both... More

I was fortunate enough to work in the Etxanobe kitchen for a week as a guest chef. Therefore my experience is from the "other side of the kitchen door". Fortunately , an important part of the experience was tasting so I got to work my way through many dishes offered on the extensive menu. The restaurant prides itself on slow... More
