In the warmer months, sitting outside in the central plaza and people watching while enjoying a cold beer is one of life's more pleasant moments. This classic restaurant is a prime place to do just that. The food is typical northern German food - we were there for white asparagus season, so perhaps better than average? Definitely worth a lunchtime... More

Great German food, great German bier and excellent Riesling from the Rhein region. Very reasonable prices, given its top location in the very center of Dortmund.

I ordered a baked potatoe with hering dip and the potatoe was so old I had to use the knife to cut it/slice it. I would have not even bother with it if I was not very hungry. ...The salad was very simple , and not that fresh either . But mostly the baked potatoe was the bigger disappointment ever,... More

I have eaten here many times while visiting relatives in Dortmund. In summer it's great to sit outside, sip a cold pilsner, and watch the world go by. If the weather isn't suitable for that, step inside and soak in the old world charm of a time gone by. I have eaten several of the schnitzel preparations here, and all... More

We had a really nice lunch here with my parents. This typical German restaurant and beerhouse is situated right at the central Markt of Dortmund. Service was friendly and the waitress spoke English quite well. The food was fair and typical German one. We enjoyed our lunch.

When I heard we had a day off in Dortmund I only had one question - why? But, in retrospect, it was a great place to have a day off - a medium sized German town, an interesting museum (Resistance & Persecution), good restaurants (Brinkhoff's No. 1) and a vibrant shopping area. The Alt Markt is a good place of... More

Went here with parents in law as it was their last night in Dortmund so we thought we'd celebrate. I ordered some kind of fried fish which arrived looking like it had been sat on by a tramp, kicked around a bit, thrown in the bin, taken out of the bin, put on a plate, had half a kilo of... More

My husband and I visited here in search of German food, we were lucky to get a table as it was very busy. The food was delicious and plentiful, cheese and garlic soup was yummy as was the crispy potluck although it was huge! Only negative is the service can be hit and miss due to the few staff and... Was staying in Dortmund together with an American colleague. He really wanted to have a typical German meal. So no Burger King. We ended up in Zum Alten Markt, and it was exactly what we were looking for. Typical German dishes in a typical German setting. We all enjoyed our meals. The service could have been a bit better. If... More

I always love visiting this place at two particular times of the Year; -In Summer at Lunch Time when you can sit outside & watch the World go by in the Market Place -And before Christmas, when the place is decked out with Decorations, and you feel like you are in the German version of a Dickensian Novel! But whatever... More
