Tucked away on one of the side-streets away from the Alstadt, Spitzen Gabel is Bremen's oldest pub, even surviving the blitz as its neighbouring structures fell. As such it has become more than a mere bar, but an attraction in itself.
That statement could be...ominous, but while tourists are undeniably drawn to Spitzen Gabel to soak up its old world charm, and a few shots out of the slamp, it's trademark. Story goes that while contructing the surrounding buildings the workers filled an oil lamp with a black liquor that they could swig on the job, and the pub maintains this tradition. It's thoroughly horrible, but quite unlike any other drink I've ever tasted, and something of an obligation to try.
The bar is very small, and does tolerate smoking, but to me these add to its real world charms. Across the street there is a beer hall where those looking for plastic Germany will find what they're looking for - this has actual locals drinking away, who have a habit of happily chatting to visitors over a half-pint (local custom) of Hakke Beck (not to be confused with the muck the Becks brewery exports)
Particularly lively before a Werder Bremen game, Spitzen Gabel is, at its heart, just a real pub that has survived for so long it has become something special. I'd thoroughly recommend anyone visiting Bremen stop by for a couple of drinks, it really is a necessity.More
