Located on Gendarmenmarkt, in the crypt of the French dome, the location of this restaurant is perfect. The service is always very friendly and knowledgeable. The kitchen strives to be innovative, which sometimes delivers excellent results, more often however the combinations, specially the sides, are a bit too creative. The meat and fish are usually very well prepared, the vegatable... More

We have dined here several times and I think this may be my favorite restaurant in Berlin. The service is excellent. The food is wonderful both innovative in presentation, well balanced in flavor and truly amazing in taste. They have very expensive wines, but we actually had a reasonably priced German Riesling with a variation of soups and a Tedeschi... More

Unusual setting in the crypt of church, but beautifully decorated and very warm and welcoming atmosphere. We booked, but it wasn't busy for a Saturday night. We only had one course, but it was sensational. I had roast lamb and my friend had roast venison. Both were cooked to perfection and well presented with a selection of fresh vegetables.

Located in the crypt of the old French Church in central Berlin, the atmosphere and service were excellent. Lovely food too, French in style, well presented, although I probably didnt make the best choice and ended up with posh fish and chips. Helps to know something about German wines to get the best experience, as they don't venture too far... More

This restaurant was recommended to us by other guests in our hotel. So pleased we went. It is situated in the cellar of an old Church - very atmospheric indeed. First class service. The food was very nouvelle, but substantial enough and very interesting and tasty. Presentation excellent. To be honest, we honestly couldn't fault the place at all. A... More

Located in the Gendarmenmarkt easily accessed from the Stadtmitte UBahn. We decided to dine here for a Christmas lunch after passing the restaurant on our way to the Christmas market. We made a booking several days beforehand and were glad we did as the restaurant was virtually full on December 25th The staff were friendly and helpful without being over... More

The food was great! We ordered different kinds of meat, and none were disappointed. In addition we got a free appetizer, which were completely amazing. The staff was nice and friendly, and made us tipping them generously... The facilities weren't of the greatest we've seen, as it was a mix of different styles and colours. Nevertheless, it's definitively worth a... More

Went here for an anniversary lunch with my husband. Lovely location and decor. Service was excellent and welcoming. The food was very good and quite reasonable considering the quality. We particularly enjoyed the apple strudel! Would probably return if in Berlin again got an evening meal.

We celebrated our wedding with around 100 guests at restaurant Refugium. The event was a huge success. The owner advised us competently and professionally about food choices and wines. We could choose an autumn menu in April, which helped greatly with the planning. The price winning wines got raving reviews from our guests. The events manager, Ms. Naumann, coordinated the event... The Refugium is located just in the Gendarmenmarkt square. The tables outdoor are lovely and in case of bad weather you have heaters and blankets available. We took only a desert and a coffee there but if was a great experience. Do not miss the deserts there!

Neighborhood Profile
Mitte
The center of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighborhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
