This tiny place, which is actually larger than it looks at first as there are a couple of additional rooms in the back, serves well-presented comfort food with pride. The owner also runs the Hotel Herrnschlosschen, which is an excellent place to stay nearby, and obviously enjoys being in the hospitality business. The restaurant was full by 7 PM, including... More

I always try to stop in to this place when I am in Rothenburg just for the atmosphere - it dates to pre-1000 AD. The owners are always nice and the beer is always good. It's just an incredible place - the lowest, oldest room has a part of a large bellows for its center table. At least stop for... More

This is a small restaurant! BUT, you have to visit if you can. The cellar was built in 980 and was amazing to sit in for our group of 10 people. The wait was a little long, but I"m glad we did. The staff was really nice. I didn't like the garlic soup, but the ribs were awesome. The fried... More

We were booked for 8:30 but we had to stand and wait for 45 minutes and then a waiter finally offered my friend and I a chair. Not a table, just chairs to wait some more. Luckily the couple who just got seated let us just sit at their table and we were able to order. I had the lamb... More

I've been in Zur Holl twice in a week and I've appreciated both. The restaurant is in one of the oldest house in Rothenburg; It's not a big place and It's better you book especially during high season but the place need to be visited at least once. Service and staff kindness is notable; the dishes to choose in the... More

Visited Rothenburg 10 days ago. Had booked a table at this restaurant - which wasnt actually necessary as the season is more or less closed now - in the Summer it is essential to book. We ordered meat, meat and meat. Very enjoyable. Cosy location with open fire. Waitress that served us was very friendly and helpful and gave us... More

We got the table in the Holl, the cellar with rustic furniture. Service was friendly although somewhat slow. The food is good with excellent wine pairing. In view of the other optuions available, I found the value somewhat overpriced, but the setting makes up for this.

How is it possible that this restaurant has so many enthusiastic reviews?? Maybe the evening that I was there the chef was ill, I don't know, but it has been one of the worst dinner since ever. By the way, I organize events for work so I am not totally unprepared for rating food… This really didn’t get the passing... More

Good - goose was great! Service was better than most German places I've been! Cool mix of locals and tourists. Not so great - very small so make reservations if you can.

On our fourth trip to Christmas Markets in Germany, we stayed in Rothenburg for two nights, one nights of which we returned to 'Hell' for dinner. We didn't have reservations this time either, but were quickly seated in the oldest room in the restaurant at it's table made from a billows. As during our previous visit in 2011, the room... More
