Cozy and welcoming ambience, excellent classic German food

This is a place that Germans would call "gemütlich" -- cozy. Warm and welcoming inside with low ceilings and closely spaced tables in connected rooms, one with a bar as well as tables. I had one of the best classic German meals I have had in Germany. We tried both soups of the day: a white... read more

We landed in Frankfurt, drove to Rothenberg, joined the Night Watchman’s Tour (very good), then ventured on to a 9:00 PM dinner reservation at Zur Holl. I had booked a month in advance, requesting the lower-level, cave-like, stone-walled room with the bellows table, which is precisely where we were taken upon arrival. This room is small, with low ceilings and... More

We came here to eat based solely on its city rankings. It wasn't until later that we learned that it was mentioned in the Night Watchman tours. The food was great, the wine was fantastic, the building is beautiful, and the wait staff was fantastic. They squeezed is in during a 40 minute window before a reservation. Even under those... More

What a great dining experience. It is a small place - which we had read, so we e-mailed and made a reservation a week in advance. We made a reservation at 6, so we finished up just in time for the 8:00 Night Watchman's tour. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful (and spoke very good English). We all had the... More

If you have only one night in Rothenburg, then you should eat here for dinner. Truly fabulous. Limited menu with several specials but everything we ordered was outstanding. The wine selections were great, the wait staff was prompt and helpful and their english is good. HIGHLY recommend this place.

This restaurant absolutely lived up to the hype. They were super accommodating and friendly with getting a last minute reservation. The service was very attentive and fast, which is a refreshing rarity in Germany. The atmosphere was everything you'd expect in a place this old, which I loved. The food was really good too and reasonably priced. Overall, I highly... More

We found Zur Holl by accident. They were completely booked but found a place for us. Wonderful atmosphere, great food and great service. Can't say enough nice things about them. Will visit again next time we are in town. Night watchman recommended after we had already eaten there.

The staff was so pleasant and nice. A lot of fun to eat here. We lucked out and got a table after the night tour, shared with four other new friends :) food was decent, the meat and cheese board was very good. Check out the bathroom area very cool

We were here on a Sunday night and thoroughly enjoyed the humorous Night Watchman's tour that started at 8pm. The guide, Hans, recommended that we go To Hell after the tour (seriously, who names their restaurant/bar To Hell?). Unfortunately this place is closed on Sunday nights but is open at 5pm the rest of the week. So we decided to... More

This little restaurant was one of the best I've eaten at in Germany. There isn't a huge selection but that's ok because everything was delicious. My husband and I shared asparagus soup. For our main dishes I had steak and pork Kabobs with salad and my husband had asparagus (spargel) with king prawns and potatoes. For dessert we tried all... More
