This restaurant was recommended by a trusted source. Yet when we looked at the menu outside and then walked in (reservations needed) we were concerned that we might not like it. We had brought guests so the evening was important to us. Wow! Every course was beautiful and delicious!

Two set menus - and so many combinations: every option can be ordered à la carte or used to make your own set menu - with that, we were able to get the best of l'Essentiel! We had first a variation with Summer truffles with oeuf mollet - superb; followed by a suprème de volaille - even better; and a... More

We got lucky when a shop keeper told us about L'Essentiel while visiting Avignon. Lunch was amazing, The amuse–bouche of a melon gazpacho set the tone for a perfect lunch. The Lamb was flavorful and the chicken was moist with a delectable mushroom gravy. Don't skip the starter of soft boiled egg with truffles...worth every calorie! Dessert, yes please, for me,... More

We had just come from a week in Paris and our expectations were high. This husband(chef) and wife(host) really delivered. The zuchinni flower stuffed with crawdad was spectacular. Delicious ,inventive food, very generous portions. We loved it. Very good vibe to the place to. You have to look for it its not on the beaten path. But if in Avignon,... More

Our meal at L'Essentiel proved to be the best dinner in France we had this trip. Recommended by le propriétaire d'hôtel, we felt extremely lucky he had made the reservations for us. As we enjoyed our delectable meal, we witnessed many without reservations turned away as the restaurant was full. The cuisine, wait staff, front of house service, and setting... More

There are restaurants from which you expect more. This was one of them. Our 3-course meal was served in a hurry as if the table had to be freed up for the next guests. Food was average, the deserts were below average (eg a 'tiramisu' that I don't mind to come from a creative cook but this mascarpone-pudding with speculoos... More

I can highly recommend this restaurant in Avignon. By far the best meal we had during our 10 day tour de France. Excellent food, excellent service and fantastic wines. Menus 30-45 euros. Make sure to book in advance.

We had dinner at L'Essential after a long day of sightseeing. The food, wine, and service were all exceptional. The owners, a husband (chef) and wife (hostess), care about every detail. We were traveling with a friend who is in the wine business. He said that L'Essential had the best wine list of our trip -- we drank moderately priced,... More

We called from the US to book reservations in advance. Everything was in order and the food was very good. The host quickly realized we spoke no French and assigned an English speaking waiter. The service was outstanding and the dishes innovative and tasty.

We were recommended this place by our hotel (we stayed at Thames Residence, thks Philippe) and would highly recommend it. Very friendly front of house and excellent food. Just note that service is included in restaurants everywhere here so don't tip twice like we did. By the way book early to get a table outside, really great little courtyard.
