Best kept secret

This little gem of a restaurant really is one of La Rochelle's best kept secrets. When you enter this restaurant, with its 16 to 20 seats, large tables and furniture from another century you do not know what to expect. There is no a la carte choices and the menu gives one two entries and two mains to choose from. However, there are about half a dozen deserts. Once you settle and service starts you... More

This is a very pleasant restaurant serving thoughtful food. Not the usual steak frites and mousse au chocolate. A very pleasant woman did all the serving at tables. She was courteous and informative about the food. We would definitely eat here again. Good value too!!!

Found this resto on TripAdvisor and liked the sound of it, exceeded expectations by a mile. The maitre d' was an angel and couldn't do enough for my disabled mother. Endlessly cheerful and helpful, and with great English, he transformed a very good meal into an exceptional experience that I'll never forget. He broke the mould of haughty French waiting... More

My husband and I had a wonderful meal in this small, intimate restaurant. The waiter spoke English very well. The bread was homemade, and the menu was small and daily. Over all our whole meal - 4 courses (2 of them shared) and a drink each was about $60....and great deal for a romantic date night.

Dined at this restaurant last weekend for our wedding anniversary. I can honestly say this is one of the nicest meals I have ever had with lovely, friendly service as well. We hadn't made a reservation but as it was quite a nice evening we opted to eat outside rather than go elsewhere. We had the set menu with three... More

This is the first time I felt let down after reading TA reports of this restaurant. The waiter was excellent, so too was the wine, but the food was poor. I was put off my fish starter when I saw somebody's finger prints in the mousse! It tasted of nothing. The main course of beef was rather tough and again... More

having read all the positive reviews we were expecting quite a lot. Went for lunch and was surprised it was a fixed menu. Single Entre, choice of three mains and about four desserts. As the service was very slow the waiter kept apologising and gave us an Amuse Bouche which was tasteless. The Entre was a fish terrine which again... More

This was my third visit to L'Amaranthe and as before the food was wonderful. I had booked a table weeks before by e-mail and although they were very buasy they had reserved a table for me and my friend. I had local cod which was light and delicious. My friend had the salad of the day. The restaurant is hard... More

Having read other good reviews, we decided to check out this place whilst in La Rochelle for a couple of days. We didn't expect a table to be available, so were very pleased to get the last table. We sat outside which was perfect. It is situated right in the heart of the old town, but just far enough away... More
