Very special birthday lunch

Tripadvisor recommended this restaurant, I’m very pleased we decided to go! We wanted somewhere special for a birthday lunch but hadn’t managed to book anywhere. Having been turned away from a few choices we decided to try Agape. On first inspection they were fully booked but with some guile Madame expertly found a spare table (I don’t know how as... More

We hadn't been for a couple of years but the set lunch here was still an excellent experience. Charming dining room and service (English spoken if necessary) and they took my husband's gluten allergy in their stride. Wine by the glass was no problem.

So good was our experience the last time that my wife and I went back for the 19.50 euros set lunch (no choice but menu is on display outside). We started with a feta and chorizo salad. I thought it would be boring. Far from it; I cleaned every drop of the place with the excellent bread provided! The main... More

This restaurant is just around the corner from the main square so does lack some of the buzz. A busy Friday night in Angouleme but only 6 in the restaurant was a little worrying but the menu looked great so we gave it a go and were pleased we did. You can sop end a lot of money here if... More

Don't panic - the restaurant front is completely different from that shown in the photograph. The restaurant is now very modern in a simplistic way decorated in black and white with pictures of 1950/60 racing cars from the September street race, known as Le Circuit des Remparts, on the walls. The décor has a very sophisticated (if simple) feel. My... More

Second time at Agape... it was my wife's birthday so we had made a reservation despite it being a Tuesday. Madame was cherful and welcoming as ever whilst M Le Chef gave us a cheery wave from the kitchen. We had a couple of house cocktails (rasberry juice, cognac and champagne... utterly gorgeous!) and opted for the Inspirations Du Chef... More

Four of us arrived for lunch on a Wednesday with a reservation. We were the only people there and were shown to a table on the first floor. The three course menu had no choice, courgette soup, magret de canard and crème bruile. Not very imaginative. The food was quite good but not exceptional. The wine starts at 20 plus euros... More

We liked this restaurant a couple of years ago and were pleased to be able to go back. Good value 3 course 16€ lunch menu. They were helpful about my husband's gluten intolerance. Delightful and stylish decor and friendly service. It was better value to order a bottle of wine and take half of it home - they had a... More

As French restaurants go, this had all the hallmarks from the outside that it should have be good. Not far from the main market, a 2011 gourmand award, short menu etc. Step inside though and you will find it short on ambience and not exactly bustling on a Friday evening without a reservation...perhaps this should have warned us to turn... Small restaurant close to the market. We had the 'normal' menu for €29. Absolutely fantastic! Foie gras ( duck) served with a chutney of mango, aniseed and some lavender followed by rump steak (saignant as I wanted it) and black bass, perfectly cooked. Desert was an ok-ish cold crumble with peach and raspberry. Except for desert a menu composed with... More
