Hidden Gem

With a name like La Marmite most English people might not expect much but this small unpretentious restaurant served excellent food with excellent friendly and helpful service at a price which compared favourably with some other restaurants serving less impressive food in grander surroundings.

Some poor misguided soul (we’re all looking at you ‘Anthony H’) called this a hidden gem. That, I assume, is the same kind of lazy jargonese that estate agents use for ‘luxury’ flats or a ‘bijoux’ cottage: believe me, none of the above are either luxury, bijoux or a gem. As far as I’m concerned La Marmite is run by... More

I was often told as a child that good things come in small packages and this fits the description very well. It is a small family run affair and so they tend to turn away people when they have had enough for the night. Those lucky enough to get a table will be happy, so avoid disappointment and book or... We found this small restaurant by accident. The owner was friendly and helpful especially with the choice of wine. The food was excellent and the number of apparently well-satisfied French people who were there must say something. We found it to be a little over-priced but then it was a city-centre restaurant in summer.

A wonderful menu served in delightful surroundings, we were helped to find the most suitable wine to accompany our dishes and each course was elegantly served, the time between courses was perfect. strongly recommend this restaurant

La Marmite is a fabulous little french restaurant. An absolutely beautiful menu and a very nice wine list. The service was excellent. Sea bass was superb.

Small restaurant. Lovely menu. Great service. Superb food; well presented; well cooked and fresh ingredients. Very good wine list. Lovely owner (someone else said that he was "intimidating"???). Good value. Off the tourist track and largely locals.

Stay away from the Joan of Arc Square. This little gem is the real deal. The owner may look a bit intimidating and you will probably find only 3 tables occupied at lunch time, but you will get personal attention!

This restaurant is tastefully decorated and immaculate. The service is impeccable. The food is very good with lovely added touches such as "amuse-bouches", petits-fours and a mousse between courses. All very reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly and professional and attend to your every need. A very lovely evening. Brilliant bathroom too!

We have visited this restaurant before the last time we were in Rouen more than 10 years ago and we wee really interested to see if it was as good as we remembered. It was every bit as good and we had another fantastic meal. Marmite is on the western edge of the Old Market Square - which is blessed... More
