Eat with the Locals

Chez Alphonse is a small restaurant in Limoges, just behind the old market building downtown. We've been there once in 2013 and once in 2014 and have yet to run into any other Americans there. The clientele tends to be strictly local. Some staff speak English, but not all do, so brush up on your... read more

On a cold wet spring day, this tiny Limousin restaurant was a joy. Warm both in temperature and character, with inexpensive regional foods and wine, this restaurant was bustling after the covered market closed at lunchtime. Recommended by our hosts at the Chateau de Ribagnac, this lived up to its reputation for friendly service and great food. An institution.

I was in the area for work and wanted some good french food where I would be able to navigate the menu (I speak no french). The wait staff here was young and willing to help translate the menu to English, which was very appreciated! I drank water and got the white asparagus and bacon for an entree and the... More

A great local experience... the place really feels like a nice local limousin restaurant and waiters and the owner, Alphonse, also really help to make you feel at home there. Everyone is very welcoming and ready to help with choices of food. The food felt really local, tripes, stuffed cabbage, limousin beef... there is a very good array of what... More

A great bistro style restaurant just by the market, doesn't look spectacular from the exterior, but go inside! Excellent food, brilliant service, classic French food with a daily lunch special that is always exciting and something to look forward to. We are in the process of buying a house in nearby Rochechaourt and can't wait to have the opportunity to... More

This restaurant was recommended by the front desk. I think we were the only American/English couple in the place. The menu is on a chalkboard on the wall. We were trying to figure out what everything was from our travel phrase book when the man at the next table (tables are very close together) asked if he could help. He... More

I went early, on a saturday night, so as to get a little table. Great waitress chose my 2 wonderful glasses of wine. Duck confit, bread, potatoes, chocolate mousse (all you can eat!), in a great old building with families and crowds having fun and a few solo diners. The little girls at the table next to me were adorable,... More

Friendly, fast service with nice little touches like the waiter checking whether we wanted a carafe of tap water rather than a bottle of mineral. I could have picked just about anything from an excellent menu and all three in our party were delighted choices although I thought that my veau pave was superb. The wine list was excellent with... We were recommended this restaurant by a local bar man...who liked his food! Not the easiest of places to find by car,sat nav to the rescue, but a really good find. We were sat downstairs and the surroundings and service were great . The food was fresh and excellent with regional dishes. Thanks for a great evening .

In the evenings, the bistro takes over mosy of the sidewalk outside it and a couple of neighbouring shops opposite Les Halles. The staff are quite proud of their 'authentic french' roots although to my mind the food is from Alsace rather than Limoges which kind of spoils the effect. Whatever, I would have thought "frites" were authentic enough by... More
