We dined here after having visited the Notre Dame. It's a small and cosy restaurant when you enter and it seemed to be filled with tourists and locals alike. The service was good and they were friendly. I took the terrine and the shrimp risotto and it was delicious! When we got the bill we were pleasantly surprised. So good... More

Au Bougnat was a nice surprise. It is so close to Notre Dame that I feared it might be a typical tourist spot with high prices and uninspired menu but I was pleasantly surprised that neither of my fears proved true. The food was exceptional and the prices were reasonable. Good enough that we went back again and were not... More

Easy to find, leaving the square in front of Notre Dame to the north, along Rue d'Arcole towards Pont d'Arcole. Ignore the Restaurant Quasimodo other than to turn right: Au Bougnat looks like a bar directly in front of you; the restaurant is in a back room. Found it in deepest winter when it was a warm place in which... More

In the tiny back room of the restaurant we spent a delightful 4 hours eating the Special of the day and the restaurant's choice of Burgundy wine. By the time we left they were sweeping up around us but the service was excellent, we were not at all rushed to eat following the rythmn of the other clients. The snails... More

This is our 2nd visit & it was far better (4+) last Christmas, where the cozy dark atmosphere was delightful & rich food hit the spot. The summer fare (maybe the same or similar menu?) is far from light & the room was hot & stuffy in June. I can only imagine July or August. The wine list is very... More

We had dinner here several years ago and it was one of the best meals that we had in Paris so we decided to have lunch before heading for the airport. It was just as good as we remember. I had a dozen escargot with toasted walnuts and garlic butter. My wife had white asparagus soup and both were delicious.... More

After having a lot of poor food in Paris, we had dinner twice at this restaurant. The food and service was good -- a marked improvement from the poor to mediocre food we had during our 14-day stay in the Paris Marais.

We both decided on a main and dessert. Peter had duck breast which was pan fried and came with a potato mash which he raved about. I had a lamb casserole with rosemary and spring vegetables which was delicious. For dessert, I had an orange creme brulee and Peter had a millefeuille. Both were very nice.

We dined at this restaurant during our recent visit to Paris and have to say it turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip! We were a little hesitant given its proximity to Notre Dame and the Seine, but it was not touristy at all and felt very authentic and homely. Most of the other patrons... More

Staying in Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis

Neighborhood Profile
Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.
