Every time I get to Paris...

Some people probably won't like Phillipe's place because it is small & plain ... but it is also quite genuinely real: this is a small business. On slow days off-season, the owner Phillipe will also be your maître d, your chef, your waiter, and busboy. I try to get over to see Phillipe every time... read more

I'll start by saying that I've read some negative reviews about this place. As far as I'm concerned those folks need to go away. Every time I visit Paris I make a point to visit this little gem of a bistro. Phillipe has always made me feel like family, has prepared a wonderful meal, and entertained my friends and I... More

Our family, with kids ages 7, 11, 14 and 16, had a reservation here thanks to the Rick Steves recommendation but when we showed up it looked closed. After knocking a bit, Phillipe the owner/chef poked his head out of an upstairs window and asked us to wait a minute while he got dressed. It was worth the wait! For... More

We found La Varangue thanks to Trip Advisor. Great little cafe located in a beautiful neighborhood Southeast of the Eiffel Tower. La Harangue is located on a narrow street where the sidewalks aren't wide enough to accommodate outdoor seating. Inside it's 8-10 tables. The chef/owner was server, sommelier and chef! Had the house wine which was a Merlot. Very enjoyable.... More

If my son had his way he would rate this 6 stars. We came early and enjoyed our meal enormously. For entrees we ordered escargot and the lobster bisque. Mains: shepherds pie with duck, duck confit and steak. Dessert a most delectable chocolate cake. This is home cooked fare that hit the spot. We are booked for tomorrow night.

Five of us visiting Paris for the first time. We ate there early during our visit and went back for our last night in Paris. Given the restaurant's size and atmosphere, we truly felt like we were invited over for a casual dinner at the Owner's home! Our food was perfect and we tried most items on the menu. Very... More

My wife and two kids ate here based on a Rick Steves recommendation in his guide book. We called and made reservations and the owner spoke enough English for us to communicate. Though we ate early enough that there was no need for reservations. The restaurant has about 5 tables and the owner cooks and serves with the help of... More

We (family of 3) visited this restaurant on our second evening in Paris while still getting over a bit of jet lag. We went early just after 6 pm and were the only ones there on a chilly February evening. We all ordered the beef bourguignon from a "formula" menu and two of us ordered entrees and the other the... My wife & I have been frequenting La Varangue, owned & run by Philippe Mollay, for over 10 years now; we've watched Philippe's daughter, Marie-Catherine, go from skipping rope in front of the restaurant to preparing for post-secondary school. What you will find at La Varangue are the following: --a warm welcome from a long day of sight-seeing; --an intimate... More

The food is very, very good. I can vouch for the beef bourguignon and rosemary chicken, but what makes this place a truly special experience is the chef and owner, Phillipe. He is such a character and he truly loves his vocation. It was one of our most memorable meals in Paris.
