Something special for the sweet tooth

A notorious place that always seems to have a queue but the little wait is well worth it. One ice-cream is better than the other and you can sample flavors you wouldn't find in any other place. A must-visit for anyone although not the cheapest place.

Title says it all: great ice cream in a range of interesting flavors including a great tangy blackcurrant flavor. The main downside was that it felt a little pricey for the relatively small serves of ice cream but maybe I have been spoilt by generous Italian helpings of gelato.

The Height of Parisan Glaces. Well worth the lines. Great selection of favors, but they are not all available on any given day. The favors are true and natural. Go to the main shop on the Rue St Louis en I'lle. Lots of both places around sell their Glaces, but best to get it from the source. Expect to wait... More

During our stay in Paris we returned to Isle de la Cite and isle St. Louis; the first to see Notre Dame yet again and the second to partake of Berthillon’s famous ice cream, yoghurt, and sorbet concoctions. I have had Gelato in Rome and Florence. They were fantastic, but Maison Berthillon is ice cream heaven. This family artisanal establishment,... More

We enjoyed sitting in the Tea Room and eating the amazing ice cream. Luckily, we walked right inside without waiting in a long line. However, I would stand in line for hours just to have this delicacy again.

We went the extra mile to visit the original Berthillon, which was walking distance from the Notre Dame Cathedral. Unfortunately, it didnt live up to the expectations. Frankly, chains such as Amorino offer better options and quality than what we experienced. The Berthillon menu was very limited and the staff rather uninterested, very different to our Amorino experience.

Simply Devine! I tried pistachio, mint, and coconut. The mint had an herbal flavor that wasn't bad just not what my American pallatte is used to. The coconut and pistachio were to die for!

We visited the shop on Ile de St. Louis. A huge selections of flavors. I had cherry (which was amazing) and cassis (black currant), a flavor I discovered on my last rip to France. I love ice cream and eat it a lot on vacation. I would order raspberry, but I always noticed that this flavor cassis was nearly empty... More

We read about this place in a guide book. A lovely distraction when walking the three Islands. Quite a wait but worth it. I would say it is more sorbet than ice cream but try as many as possible in more than one visit though! Lime, rhubarb, yoghurt & Panama cotta all superb. Ask for the biggest tub/cup you can... More

Berthillon is an ice cream (glace) institution and is worth a stop. You can walk here in just minutes from Notre Dame. The table service tends to be slow and snooty, but the takeaway window is quick. You can then take your tiny, marble size ball of ice cream and in 30 seconds be standing on a bridge over the... More

Staying in Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis

Neighborhood Profile
Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.
