Classic French cuisine, fish a speciality

In Tours for the (very good) Vitiloire wine fair, this was an ideal restaurant for lunch. The dishes were all excellent, with a special mention for the fish. Oysters were excellent quality and the service was friendly and attentive. To be repeated.

My wife have been going to La Chope Restaurant several times a year for the last 20 years having actually dined in French restaurants for over fifty years. The current owners are outstanding in that the chef is French, his wife who is front of house is English (and speaks fluent French) and their staff are also very good, providing... More

We ate there two nights running and thought the food was excellent. Thankfully it was about the only classic French restaurant near to our hotel on an otherwise dull trip. First impressions were good with starched white table cloths. Lots of people eating massive fruit de mer, but that's not for me. I had the fish of the day on... More

Very big restaurant, pretty informal, where it's possible to eat standard courses. Food, service and price in the average.

I've given this restaurant, which is a short walk from my house, 3 tries, both for lunch and dinner. Although I can live with the indifferent service, the food is just not very good--it's tired and uninspired. The last time I went was for moules frites night and sadly, the frites seemed very much like they were frozen and came... More

This place was recommended by our B&B and it was really good. We arrived in Tours on a Sunday night when a lot of restaurants are closed. We really enjoyed it.

This place has a deservedly high reputation, especially for its fish. I am not a fan of seafood in general, but I have now been here twice and will be back. This time I enjoyed grilled wild salmon with endives/chicory which was exceptional: the salmon was very fresh and the combination of crunchy uncooked chicory with tasty braised chicory complemented... A pre-Christmas lunch with friends at La Chope in Tours. A large pre-booked group of 25, who belong to a bi-lingual association of French and English. For us, our first visit. But some there are regulars. After this experience so will we be. Absolutely first rate. Exceptional quality and value. We had an advance choice to make of two menus... More

On reading other reviews I think we may just have been unlucky. The starters and dessert were fine but the main course of black cod was overcooked, chewy and just unpleasant. Coupled with the very surly service this was not a good experience. This restaurant was recommended to us by a tour guide but we had better (and cheaper) meals... More

After an awful day this was the perfect tonic. 55.90 euros for two. Very good main course. Michelin star standard Creme brûlée. Good wine and aperitifs. A bargain. Little wonder this place has survived over a century.
