The Food Is Better than the Welcome

Why are they so glum? The food is good. A lot of effort went into it. The prices are a bargain. The wait staff could be friendlier. This should be a showplace, but it isn't now.

The service was outstanding, prompt efficient and pleasant. They fitted us in after a muddled up booking by Loire Valley travel. The food was delicious, particularly the entree of prawns, and the wine.

We had an amazing meal here, probably the best while in France. The quality was first class and well worth the money.

My husband and I had dinner here during our two night stay in Amboise upon recommendation from TA and a women's tour leader. It was also on the list recommended by our hotel. The room was traditional and quite pretty. Service was very good and prices fair but the meal was not too good. My husbands duck was nearly raw... More

Situated under the Chateau Amboise, the restaurant was in a beautiful room, with subtle decor. We were given a free taster, followed by a beautifully presented 3-course, with lots of lovely food to satisfy smaller and larger appetites. Fixed price menu very reasonable for such a quality place. Not in the main area so easily missed.

Really great informal place with outstanding food. Michelin 1 star quality imho. Not sure if it has any stars..... Pleasant service, good wine selection but pricey by local standards. We had 3 course €39 menu and my friend had €50 menu with fish course, Pate was terrific! Pork loin braised for 12 hours, yum Chocolate dessert(good but not fantastic for... More

Creative cuisine, well executed and well delivered. The dinner room's setting seems a bit formal, but

The food is just amazing. I can't single out a dish because whatever you eat there will be great. They have a modern dining room in front with the views of the river and a French dining room in the back with chandeliers and huge windows and draperies (also with the view of the river but trust me, you won't... In my experience restaurants near tourist sites are often over priced and of low quality. Neither was the case for Le Lion d'Or which is just around the corner of the chateau d'amboise. We were looking for a place to eat our first night in Amboise, and the tripadvisor sticker drew us in. I'm never sure what we'll find when... More

If you're in Amboise, start here. Instead of your typical, redundant French fare, you'll get an interesting spin from a friendly chef with a sense of creativity and nuance. The wine list well complimented the dishes, the meal was well paced, the service deliberate and friendly, and the presentation delightful. If you use this as your starting point, you'll have...
