Classic French Food with a Modern Twist

On a Fall night in October, we found Le Cheval Noir conveniently located just outside the old city wall in Beaunne. The restaurant had a surprisingly unstuffy modern decor. The atmosphere is "cold" , lacking a proper sense of style. Service is diligent, advice on wine was very good (we ended up with a deliciously bodied 2009 Givry). Food was only mediocre although the "paleron" (very slow cooked piece of beef) was successfully tasty and tender. I would neither recommend (unless no other choice ) neither go back.

Excellent food and fabulous service. We will definitely return. Both meat and seafood dishes were beautifully prepared.

Pros: Really great service, beautiful interior, good menu Cons: No air conditioning We arrived in Beaune on a Sunday night and knowing most restaurants in this town would be closed I asked the hotel desk for a recommendation and to make a reservation. Cheval Noir was his recommendation. On arrival (in a rainstorm) we were nicely greeted, helped with our... More

Our food was quite good but the service was not. We did not return there again but enjoyed what we ate.

There seem to be very mixed views here, but our experience was entirely positive. Eating outside was not an option for us, but future visitors should certainly be aware the terrace is on the Beaune ring road. We booked before leaving the UK and were glad we did because walk-in customers had to be turned away. Even in a town... More

My husband and I chose the Cheval Noir for our last meal after two marvelous weeks in Beaune and we are so glad we did. We chose the tasting menu with wine pairings and we enjoyed every bite and sip. The meal was served at a leisurely pace which gave us enough time in between courses to appreciate each one... More

We had dinner here one night. We paid a bit over 100 euros for a 3 course menu for two, plus a nice bottle of wine. It was good value for the money. Every course we had was elaborately put together and beautifully presented. The staff is extremely professional and service is very good, although a bit fast (which I... More

Food was just ok. We had snails that had a slight dirt taste and the garlic butter needed salt. We ordered entrecôte but was told that they didn't have it but some other meat. One portion was so hard it was almost impossible to chew. When we told the waiter she got defensive. We wanted a really good wine with... More

We had visited this restaurant the year before and were looking forward to a return trip. The food on the whole was very good with one exception. The steak was over cooked. By itself not an issue but having to debate it with the staff on at least 3 occasions insisting my view was wrong coloured the whole evening. Maybe... More
