Lived up to the great reviews

We haven't eaten out much during our week in St J de L, so wanted to make sure that our last night's meal was a good one. We are staying by the market and were blown away by the reviews for the very local Chez Pablo. We were not disappointed. WE got there earlyish - and it was already buzzing... read more

We went to Chez Pablo based on other Tripadvisor reviews and we weren't disappointed. Tucked away down a small side street away from the tourist hot spots, it is exactly the kind of local restaurant we love to eat at on holiday. We got there just after the opening time of 7.30pm and managed to get one of the last... More

Chips or salad...not chips AND salad... 2 stars First the good points. The place itself is quite charming with its red checkered table cloths (plastic) and matching cloth napkins. The dining room is mostly made up of large tables with benches to sit on and you are seated where there is space. This means there is a chance of bumping... More

I aksed the local cheese shop owner for a lunch suggestion- might not have found this place otherwise. The food is simple but restaurant was filled with locals. Owner was a real joker, keeping the whole place laughing with his jests - seeing a couple where the husband we peering at cell phone, he shouts " Someone come talk to... More

We really had an overall memorable experience. A local restaurant with the owners serving the food. Off the beaten track an a abselute must if you're looking for something authentic. We had the Cote de Boeuf, very very good!!!

Atmosphere is authentic, service is simple but warm and efficient. I engaged into the most fascinating talk about wines from the region with our waiter who knew more than most sommeliers at Michelin star restaurants! Food was amazing, which makes one forget we were sitting on wooden benches. Incredible experience...

Chez Pablo is unique. Excellent food, atmosphere and service. It is authentic and theatrical. Some people just don't get the superb host, ( mainly people without a sense of humour.) I went there several times with my French parents in law and half French children. The food is plentiful, well cooked and arrives fairly quickly. Children are welcome. You should... More

Food was very bland, tasteless, nothing special. The owner (?) had put on a non-stop show, relentlessly making fun of the patrons, with stupid, bad jokes. Somewhat tiring, pathetic, and irritating. Never again.

Coming to this restaurant wasn't our first choice. Judging by the looks of it from outside, Chez Pablo didn't look anything special, but it promised authentic basque cuisine plus we were hungry and getting impatient in trying to find where to eat. They had table to accommodate our needs - we stayed and I am so glad we did. The... More

This place deserves the Certificate of Excellence 2013. It is located on a secondary road. This is the only downside in my opinion though this was not a busy road and not many cars passing. This is a family business. It does not look like a posh restaurant but you could hardly find a table, it is really busy. The... More
