Our first night in St. Jean de Luz - a good restaurant find

We found this restaurant in a side street off the Place Louis. It had a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff. We decided to have the E19.50pp menu - very good value. G had soupe de poissons which was good, and I had the salade de chevre with white asparagus and bacon - very good. We shared the... read more

Wish we had found this one sooner. What makes this so special ? The ambiance for a start. Spacious, traditional old basque house with clean modern decor, comfortable cushioned chairs and wonderfully friendly English speaking owner and staff. The menu is one of the most varied you will find and the food is that much better. They are flexible too.... More

La Vieille Auberge is ideally located at a footstep from the beach, in one of those streets where you may find thousands of restaurants per m². So why is it different from the others ? First of all, the food : generous, fresh, local receipes, and affordable prices. The menu offer a wide range of comfy and typically Basque dishes,... More

Since writing my original review, we have since been back several times in the past year and on each occasion, now we are regulars so to speak, the welcome gets even better. We are recognized on each occasion and even when the restaurant is very busy, they, the staff and the boss, always take time for a chat - Superb.... More

Clearly insufficient man power, operated by three waiters for over 100 seats. In addition, only one toilet was provided with these customers. Since the meals, cost performance were good, I regret the shortage of workers and unplanned hardware.

Well, not quite, but it's less 'bustling' than the Rue Republique. Had a very nice magret d' canard here (duck breast). Good service and a more peaceful atmosphere. Good value too. More than just fish. One to remember.

Well located in a beautiful town. The food was average. The staff member was extremely rude during our visit. I can speak fluent French yet he failed to realise this and made offensive comments about the other customers. I would advise people to go to the restaurant 20 meters down the road on the left - the food and service... More

Great venue next to lots of other seafood, basque restaurants etc. Same waiter as Cafe Lucien who was very attentive. All waiters great. Steak and frites excellent. Wonderful venue in a small pedestrian street near the promenade. Great.

Traditional Basque/French food at a fair price. Good portions, great ambience and excellent service. The manager/patron was very courteous and welcoming, as were all of the waiting staff. In general the standard of the food was very acceptable, the only negative for me being the chips which accompanied a bowl of otherwise excellent mussels; they were not crisp and were... More

Strolling the attractive streets of Saint-Jean-de-Luz we came upon La Vieille Auberge. My fish soup was adorned with tiny mussels and my wife's chevre salad was large enough for two (or three). Her gambas were as good as any in Spain and my grilled seafood platter was a delight- I really didn't need the baked potato. We had a bottle... More
