Hire another few people. Although the food was just average, it took a long time to even get a look at the menu board. I had to get up and ask and was embarrassed to do that. I felt bad for the guys who were working as hard and as efficiently as possibly human. We sat outside and thought inside... More

The restaurant opened in 1920 and still serves very good basque fooa. The foie gras is marvellous, the assietes are plentiful and the brochette de lotte with chorizo is typical of the basque food mixing spanish and french flavours. The ambiance is cosy and nice with locals eating their meals while reading the newspaper but during the high season things... More

The food was excellent at competitive prices with great service and suggestion of accompanying wines. Friendly and homely experience. We thought it worth recommending since it's away from the tourist-area restaurants of the harbour area; we stumbled upon it quite by accident. Despite it being a week day evening it was busy and for us it was the first positive... More

Bad expensive food Worse service the only thing worth seeing is the decor inside It is a pity as the Bar Basque was once THE place to go and to be seen in the 50s and 60s, it was double the size it is now and there was a great ambience. It has changed hands many times since then, but... More

Very slow service and somehow our main course order was lost in the system on what seemed to be a relatively quiet evening. What is worse is that the staff hadn't noticed we had been waiting for a long time. An compensatory glass of wine each was offered and accepted. When the main meal finally arrived, the duck with honey... More

We recently were lucky enough to spend a short break in St. Jean de Luz and Bar Basque almost became our 'local' as it is located away from the real tourist area and the food and service was relaxed and it is a great place to sit quietly for a morning coffee, afternoon apero or evening meal. The lunchtime menu... More

We went to Bar Basque twice in our 3 days in St. Jean de Luz - once for drinks (5 stars), once for dinner (3 stars). It's a great place to relax mid-afternoon for a drink or a coffee on the outdoor patio. There is great people watching. Dinner, however, was a different story...the service was horrible. The waiter admittedly... More

Set back from the seafront, the bar is on the main street and it's very pleasant to sit outside and watch the world go by. We've been here at different times of day, and had a good variety of things from the menu. Service is always good, and the menu has all the traditional basque fare plus a few inventive... More

This restaurant is situated just in from the sea front on a not too busy road. We sat outside on the terrace. I had the best chipirones that I have had in the Basque country. My partner had mussels which were also outstanding. Neither of us usually eats pudding but the Basque Creme Brulee was not to be missed. It... More
