Good food and portions

As usual, I had the Kir Royale aperitif and G had 50cl Rose. We shared entrees - the plat du tapas (7 items) and the Serrano ham - both good. Main courses I had the brochette of lamb with red peppers and Espagnol red sauce and frites - good. G had the 5 large gambas a l'Ail served with rice.... read more

The salmon was the best we've ever had - slightly charred on one side, perfectly moist. Amazing! And the side dish of squash with a Parmesan topping was superb. The wait staff is super friendly and spoke some English. Try their MACCA'B cocktail - secret recipe. A wonderful experience we will never forget.

Attracted by the constant busyness of the pavement tables and interesting looking tapas every time we walked past , we went for an evening meal here and we were not disappointed . Diverse and interesting assiette de tapas followed by a shared delicious merluz ( hake) cooked in a spanish style - straight from the oven . Cooked to perfection... More

On a flying visit to the town this place was recommended by the proprieter of the hotel we were staying in. It was quiet when we arrived but we had been on the road all day and were eating a little early. Waiters very attentive and made some ood recommendations which we went along with and were not disappointed. Would... More

Bar Basque is great. The service, ambience and cuisine is straight forward and authentically very good. The regulars are there nightly if not for dinner then an order of tapas and their famous drink, la Macca B. Yes it is addictive. We stY in St Jean de Luz yearly for 3 weeks in September and without Bar Basque we would... More

Hire another few people. Although the food was just average, it took a long time to even get a look at the menu board. I had to get up and ask and was embarrassed to do that. I felt bad for the guys who were working as hard and as efficiently as possibly human. We sat outside and thought inside... More

The restaurant opened in 1920 and still serves very good basque fooa. The foie gras is marvellous, the assietes are plentiful and the brochette de lotte with chorizo is typical of the basque food mixing spanish and french flavours. The ambiance is cosy and nice with locals eating their meals while reading the newspaper but during the high season things... More

The food was excellent at competitive prices with great service and suggestion of accompanying wines. Friendly and homely experience. We thought it worth recommending since it's away from the tourist-area restaurants of the harbour area; we stumbled upon it quite by accident. Despite it being a week day evening it was busy and for us it was the first positive... More

Bad expensive food Worse service the only thing worth seeing is the decor inside It is a pity as the Bar Basque was once THE place to go and to be seen in the 50s and 60s, it was double the size it is now and there was a great ambience. It has changed hands many times since then, but... More

Very slow service and somehow our main course order was lost in the system on what seemed to be a relatively quiet evening. What is worse is that the staff hadn't noticed we had been waiting for a long time. An compensatory glass of wine each was offered and accepted. When the main meal finally arrived, the duck with honey... More
