Refined fusion food

Interesting food which combines oriental and French cuisine It would only suit a very refined taste It is very small restaurant and booking in advance is recommended Not my favorite restaurant in Strasbourg and I know all the best ones but it provides an interesting go change On the expensive side

We had a break from a couple of nights of heavy Alsatian cuisine to enjoy the Asian-inspired fusion dishes at Umami. The restaurant is very attractive and the patronne is friendly and welcoming. The decor is stylish and appealing, in tones and textures of greys and beige. The restaurant is small (around 8 tables) so you need to reserve ahead,... More

Despite its name (the 5th ingredient in ``washoku`` traditional Japanese food techniques) this is not a Japanese restaurant nor even a Japanese-French fusion restaurant; rather it is an ASIAN-French fusion. The flavors added to traditional French dishes are SE Asian, Chinese, Japanese. And the result is exquisite. The amuse bouche included a shrimp cracker on which there was a beet,... More

Nice atmosphere, fresh and interesting food. The restaurant is elegantly designed. The quality justifies the price. Highly recommend !

I went there on two occasions approximately one year apart, it's fantastic! The wine, the service, the food, all in all the best thing is the true umami experience. You will find the fifth flavor in every course. The experience of the chef really shows in everything he does, there is complexity and research everywhere. You have to eat very... More

We were visiting Strasbourg for the day from Basel and called for reservations. Was told they were fully booked. But around 3pm, we received a call that there was a cancellation. Our sight seeing was cut short due to the weather. It started raining at 4pm and our reservations were for 7:30pm. We made the most of it and waited... More

fine food with a touch of exotism, very far from "alsacian cuisine" in the heart of the old "petite france"

Michelin 1 star very well priced for the quality. Excellent food, beautifully prepared. Would definitely return to Umami.

When I reserved at this deservedly Michelin one star restaurant and said I eat gluten free I was warmed there might be menu restrictions because soy sauce is often used in its Japanese inflected cooking. No problem. Wonderful and subtle dishes all. And the chef had baked a buckwheat-corn loaf for me as good as any GF bread I had... More

We came for the seven courses tasting menu but choosing our own wines and thoroughly enjoyed all the courses. The whole thing was lovely and we found the service was impeccable (our friend lives in Strasbourg and knows the owners well). I was amazed that the Chef was on his own cooking the meals and this wife served all the... More
