Lots of steps, but worth the effort

Located on the cathedral square, Gurtlerhoft is an ideal spot to get away from the crowds and enjoy some Alsatian hospitality. It is underground, so some steep stairs down, and then the cellar is multi-level, so stairs again, therefore not suited to the less agile. Often restaurants near major... read more

We happened upon this restaurant our first night in Strasbourg. It was so memorable that I still think of this meal frequently. We didn't have a reservation, but they had no problem seating us. The waitress was delightful, she was very patient with my French. The tarte flambee was a perfect appetizer. I ordered foie gras, which was amazing. My... More

Was hoping for more from this place. The setting is very cool. It's the ancient wine cellar of the cathedral across the square. The ambience is lovely. We had made a reservation earlier in the day, but when we arrived they did not have one for us. They found us a table, but it was a little discomforting. The onion... More

My husband and I had dinner here and everything about it was wonderful - the atmosphere, the helpful staff and the food was fabulous. We both had traditional dishes that wouldn't be considered light, summer fare but in the cool cellar restaurant they were delicious. It was quite filling so we didn't have dessert. I couldn't recommend it higher. When... More

We ate here on our first night in Strasbourg and found it using TA location service, and for the timing and situation we could not have picked a better place to eat. It's right next to the cathedral, in an underground cellar that used to be part of the cathedral wine cellar, so a pretty cool venue steeped in history.... More

Nice atmosphere and you are sitting in a kind old dungeon. Simple menu card with both local Alsace dishes and more international. Fine wine card but limited selections. We got local Alsace dishes and all of the was well prepared and tasted good. Dessert was fine. All in all good recommendations.

I've eaten here twice before, so I knew expect nothing short of greatness—and I wasn't disappointed in the least. First we were greeted by a friendly hostess, who showed us to our table. Then, it was on. Wonderful drinks. Cool, crunchy, lightly dressed crudité. Delicious cordon bleu and spaetzle. Rich, hot coffee. I was in heaven—and so well-fed that I... More

This afternoon we had lunch at Gurtlerhoft per recommendation of our hotel agent for dinner last night but they were fully committed. The ambiance is phenomenal since its situated in a traditional "caveau" or cave. We had the mushroom puff pastry to start.... Delish! And my husband and I had flammenkuchen which is an Alsatian specialty. We left so full... More

We visited on a public holiday and hadn't reserved a table so went as soon as the restaurant opened for dinner. It felt cosy and welcoming and very quickly got busy. We wanted to try some local dishes so we chose from the set menu. Lovely food, well presented and at a reasonable price. I particularly enjoyed the cafe gourmand... More
