The Victorian grandeur of The Midland Hotel is beyond doubt outstanding on approach, however once inside it becomes somewhat utilitarian, all most reminiscent of being inside a international train station. ''The French'' has little or no atmosphere and as the large doors to restaurant remain open during the meal, this lofty space feels cold and draughty. Yes I agree with... More

To start with the strongly positives. The welcome and service were very good - especially from the Sicilian wine waiter, who sparkled with infectious, knowledgeable enthusiasm. Not least at lunchtime, it's so good to have imaginatively-chosen wines of such quality available by the glass: a top Alsace Riesling and a delightful Armenian red. And the sheer creativity and skill that... More

Simon Rogan's French is nestled inside the Midland's Hotel in the heart of Manchester. The restaurant is plain looking, the decor could have been better. The ambience is flat, you immediately understand that people are here to just dine, and enjoy the culinary experience and nothing more. Food takes centre stage, we went for the 10 course tasting menu and... More

On arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff and shown into a pleasant but unremarkable room with little atmosphere and no music making conversation a little difficult. We were eagerly anticipating our 10 course gourmet journey and not disappointed, however as you actually get 16 courses, all delicious and beautifully presented, although the Husb didn't like the 'salad' course... Having been to many Michelin restaurants, including the wonderful L'enclume, I've no doubt that The French is a very good restaurant, but for me not yet of the highest standard and definitely the wow factor wasn't there. We had the 10 course tasting menu. Some courses, such as the Ox and the Hake were fantastic. However the frozen large lump... More

Simon Rogan is showing the rest of them how to present fine food. The attention to detail shown in the food leaving the kitchen and the excellent service from the front of house staff made this one of the best dining experiences we have ever encountered. A special mention must go to the super friendly maître d Camilla who quietly... More

Although not perfect well worth a 5 score. We have eaten in a number of Michelin starred restaurants and some of the food at The French was as good as any. I know we all have different tastes but the negative comments on here I think are un fair. The quality of the cooking and the capability of the chefs... More

The title says it all really - the food was inventive, creative and cooked to perfection. The decor and atmosphere exude understated luxury. There really is zero pretension amongst the staff who are extremely attentive yet un-intrusive, as well as being willing to engage in warm and friendly conversation if you want them to. This was undoubtedly one of the... More

For a special occasion this restaurant can't be faulted. The food and service is flawless, and the room looks amazing. We went on a saturday night and got the 6 course tasting menu rather than the 10 course. At £60 a head rather than £100, I still think it represents great value - there were a couple of extra courses... More

Could not fault anything. Cannot understand why it did not get any stars this year. Food and service excellent, well worth a visit, but you need to book in advance.
