I took my mrs here for her birthday having already done manchester house last year. Everything was delicious apart from my venison which was overcooked and tough. Lovely looking place but the atmosphere perhaps left a little to be desired. Crowded once full, the staff made you feel uneasy with their awkward dancing to get passed each other. Overall a... More

I had been meaning to contact The French for awhile as my husband was dying to try it, so I emailed to ask about a vegan menu, which could accommodate some allergies I have recently been diagnosed with. I had a fantastic response from Restaurant Manager Kamila, who liased with Head Chef Adam and I was offered a six or... More

I am dissappointed to be writing this review. I have eaten at Simon Rogan's other restaurant in Cartmel, L'enclume and had the most wonderful gastronomic experience of my life. I was lucky enough to be taken to The French for my birthday and was very excited. Unfotunately, the experience left me a little underwhelmed. The service was good, and I... More

We booked for the 10 course taster menu, which is the only option available on a Friday and Saturday night at £85pp. (wine flight additional £75pp) On arrival, we were worried the restaurant was going to be too formal and quiet for our taste, especially as we were 4 girls with a lot of chatting to do. We needn't have... More

I wasn't going to write a review because I could hear the sort of people that go here saying 'your palette isn't experienced enough to appreciate the food' this was a birthday meal and it was a wonderful experience and the 16 course taster menu is executed ( over used foodie term) in a perfect way, you leave the restaurant... The French occupies a surprising small, but refined space in The Midland Hotel. The central tables in upholstered bays helped promote an informal atmosphere. For dinner the choice is 6, or 10 course taster menus, but your are advised to request alternatives if you have a dislike, or problem with any of the courses offered. The courses are varied and... A good start to 2016 with the first meal of the year at The French by Simon Rogan. The decor of the restaurant manages to respect the Edwardian history of The Midland Hotel whilst having a modern ambience, with the ornate chandeliers dazzling above as a centrepiece. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable without being too over bearing and... More

My wife and I had the £50 lunch menu (great value, inc drinks). Having done the same a few month earlier, when we enjoyed it but were probably expecting more of the "Rogan" touch last time and I'm pleased to say that the restaurant has gone up on every level. Service was superb: very proper, discreet, yet friendly and paced... More

We enjoyed the 6 course taster menu. All courses were fantastic. My only negative comments would be the restaurant décor and slightly austere staff. The tables & chairs are bare timber set on a mushroom coloured carpet which to me felt drab. The room is missing some panache! The staff that attend us were pretty sombre and seemed too focussed...
