My wife and I called in for a meal while on a short break in Lancaster, and we weren't disappointed As the name suggests 'Merchants' is a late 1600 wine merchants cellar,it has great character the staff are very friendly and helpfull, the food is excellent.

Many pubs in UK use the term 'gastro' and they are far from it, but Merchants 1688 is for sure solidly able to claim themselves as a gastro-pub. The ambiance and character is brilliant, and the place is very well lit considering it has no windows at all I had Pie of the Week, which was a Chicken Mushroom, and... More

Popped in here on a whim as I walked past it from the train station. I was ravenous after my journey and had a steak pie to fill me up. It worked a treat as the food was great an full of meat, not like some southern pies...;) Staff were all chirpy and polite and it is clean and tidy.... More

Excellent meal at Merchants where on Monday and Tuesday it is 2 meals and a bottle of wine for £28. We had steaks which should have come to £30 plus the wine all for £28. Delicious!

Excellent food and service in quirky restaurant with vaulted ceiling. We chose to eat late and avoid the rush and it paid off. The restaurant was quiet which suited us 4 adults. The Sunday roasts were generous portions and my Lancashire hotpot was tasty and well cooked (I would have liked a bit more lamb in it but this minor... More

It's a nice olde world venue and the waitress staff are pleasant and friendly. On arrival the barman attempted to put us off eating there as he repeated told us 'there was a long waiting time' (which there wasn't!). Food was well presented but unfortunately all to average. Also the extra side order of chips had been 'double' cooked (they... More

One of the best pubs in Lancaster in terms of food quality, service and ambiance, so rare to find all of those in one place, oh and really good value for money for the food! This is my favourite place and I have lived in Lancaster for 7 years, always bring my visitors here. I had always thought more an... More
