One of the best pubs in Lancaster in terms of food quality, service and ambiance, so rare to find all of those in one place, oh and really good value for money for the food! This is my favourite place and I have lived in Lancaster for 7 years, always bring my visitors here. I had always thought more an... More

Discovered what we thought was a bar only the night before & we were well received by a fellow Southerner. We returned the following night & dined on Morecombe Bay shrimps Lune Valley lamb & Lancashire Hot pot all locally sourced all excellent, served by a delightful waitress with speed & courtesy, Have no hesitation in highly recommending Merchants 1688... Lancaster is a beautiful place, with a lot of quaint establishments. Although we didn't eat here (limited time) being an 300 year old previous wine cellar, it certainly has the wow factor. There seemed a lot of diners, and if the chance arose in the future and we where back in Lancaster, that would be a definite port of call.

It had been a while since I had been to this real Lancaster gem. I hadn't been back since parting from my ex and moving to Liverpool but when a friend of mine was flying over from Pittsburgh I decided to drive her around the North West and we stayed over in Lancaster on our way up to the Lake... This historick pub is another one of Lancaster's gems. The food here is always good and I'm quite parcial to a bottle of Leffe while i call in here and there red wines are good too. I would recommend going here for food or just a drink. Friendly staff and great pub :-)

Called in here yesterday and had the £25 offer which is anything on the menu plus a decent bottle of wine. Had been earlier in the day and noticed what a good wine list (available by the glass) there was. Food and service was excellent. My duck was a bit tough but everything else was perfect. Will definitely go back... More

Originally a wine cellar, so there are 3 arched dining areas, with soft lighting, soft music and perfectly placed tables and chairs. Waiting staff are happy, welcoming and they produce fabulous food at very reasonable prices. Bottle wine, dinner for 2 £25!!! Wonderful!!!
