A lovely interesting place to eat with great food

We brought friends who were passing through and had a lovely meal in the ambience of the Merchants. Soup and Sandwich, pie and sausages were the food we ordered. Great service and lovely tasting food. Will definitely come again!

Amazing location, amazing surroundings, amazing food, and apparently amazing beer (have to take dad's word for it!)... Da had the boar special which was apparently delicious and I had the local beer battered fish! Not the traditional batter, there was some ingredients and spices in there which i loved, but someone more set in their ways going for a safe... More

Cool place to eat (ie if the weather is too warm) Good sized outside area, with a feature of old cellars inside to maintain the cool environment. Great choice of ales and wine, no cocktails though. Food choice is good, and I tried a special - pan friend wild boar - my daughter had the beer battered F and C.... More

Regularly come to Lancaster and come to Merchants a fair bit (we have previously booked on a few occasions but have been various times throughout the day week and have always found a table easily) due to the cosy ambience and the welcoming impression given off by staff. Food is always timely and is definitely worth the money and I... More

Merchants 1688 is a really warm cosy place to have a drink and a meal. It's really unique in that the pub is a converted wine cellar giving it a rustic, warm and private atmosphere. The range and quality of real ales is very good and the staff and helpful and friendly.

We've eaten here quite a few times, and almost each time the food was disappointing! The fish and chips were soggy, the fish tasted bitter due to the clearly old oil it was fried in. On a separate occasion I ordered a Caesar salad and it was absolutely awful! How can you mess up a salad so badly? The lettuce... More

Called in on Saturday night about 8:15 pm. I was hoping for a sustenance. Still serving food but could be an hour...no problems..food arrived less than 30 minutes later. Merchants burger....succulent, topped with garstang blue cheese on a soft toasted brioche bun (inspired combination); good crispy, golden chips. Delicious. As ever the staff were a joy

The food here might be tasty, but there's so little of it for quite a large price that I can't quite bring myself to recommend eating here. There are certainly worse places, but unless you're looking to spend £25 and leave still hungry this place isn't for you.
