I recently visited the merchants for my birthday during the day. The lunch time menu was full of choice, well priced and great large portions. The young blonde woman who served us at the bar was very efficient and polite and offered us options with our food. My partner wanted a starter as a main but wasn't sure if it... More

The food here is gorgeous and the price is very good. Very nice dining area. You can eat at either the table service or bar service for the same price. If I visit Lancaster again I will definitely be eating here.

We enjoyed a really nice lunch on the Monday when we visited, the pulled pork sandwich was to die for.We also took advantage of the £28 meal for two with a bottle of wine the following night and I took advantage of ordering a steak which was cooked to perfection and the chips are amazing. All in all the highlight... More

Came here to toast a friend's leaving do and the food was great as always. Depending on when you go you can be waiting for a table (unless you reserve of course) or for your food if busy (30 mins sometimes) but with drinks and conversation flowing the time flies by. The staff are always courteous and the menus interesting.

My partner and I went to the Merchants 1688 for an evening meal. Mains were a rather excellent steak and a trio of sausages with mash. Desserts were very scrummy ice cream of varying flavours. A nice merlot on the side. Service was friendly and attentative throughout. The place is pretty unique with a cosy, welcoming atmosphere.

Stopped for tea and scones before getting train home - interesting little place with bags of history, at the foot of the Castle Hill. Great service, decent prices for a venue of this type, comfortable furnishings and welcoming, chatty staff who bend over backwards to ensure everything is to your liking. My friends had the scones and they looked amazing,... More

Tucked in to a cellar at the bottom of the road to the castle, this would be easy to miss. I dropped in on the off chance as I had an hour over lunchtime to wait for my train (station 5mins gentle walk). Friendly staff and good beer. Chose a risotto with some trepidation,as pub risotto can be awful, but... More

Hi JFBell, Thank you for taking the time to review our pub / restaurant. I had the pleasure of serving you yesterday and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your visit. The risotto dish you thought was 'delicious' is a new item on our menu, so it's great to hear some feedback that is so positive. Thanks again, Ailsa Morrison... More

Visited a year ago and was very impressed so returned this year during my annual visit. Service was very poor (didn't look understaffed0, waited 10 minutes before drinks order. When the starters arrived mine came 5 minutes after the other 4, all the starters were great. The mains weren't so good. The fish and chips looked super, the rabbit leg... More
