Evening meal at Merchants

As my husband and I were staying in a travelodge in Lancaster we had to eat out and after much searching (had never been here before) came across Merchants, a nice cosy little pub/restaurant. The little dining room we sat in used to be a wine cellar many years ago and with its brick walled interior... read more

I always take visitors into Merchants even if we aren't having a drink or food just to see the row of 3 fantastic stone arched cellars. The historic interest of the building and it's ambiance is great. It also has a beer terrace which is a sun trap and well positioned for people watching being so close to the train... More

An interesting building. It seemed rather noisy when we looked in it but there are tables in the old cellars which are no worse than most places. The food was good.

Wanted to eat here last time in Lancaster, but booked up, so made sure we got a table this time.... In the afternoon, had a lovely pint sitting in the outside area, watching the word go by. Then in the evening, sat having lovely meal in the 300 year old cellars. Great food, great beer, nice atmosphere, and good service

Being a tavern with a cavern like feel does limit the summer trade but on the more dismal summer day it proved a perfect respite from the rain with really good food, nice beer and a gallery of photographs from a local photographer to boot. Couldn't fault anything, thank you for a great lunch.

We enjoyed the Sunday lunch menu, a choice of three meats and one vegetarian option. Good sized portions and good value for money. We booked late so ended up in one of the side bays which was interesting although a bit dark (no natural light)

Although this restaurant was at the top of a hill it felt quite subterranean because it was built into a wine cellar with a rounded stone roof over your head. Although it appeared medieval, the menu was very up to date and interesting. I had a shared meat plate and it was very good indeed. The staff were friendly and... More

A cellar with lovely barrel vaulted ceilings so great atmosphere. Went with a party of friends for lunch. The food was pretty good and I thought good value. the caesar salad that my wife had wasn't good though. Swamped with anchovies We all had a good time and the bill was very reasonable
