Good food in a good pub

The food here is really good, it's just that the surroundings is just a pub. A separate dining area would be more suitable, although the area overlooking the kitchen (through a picture window that is sometimes curtained) is normally dining only, these are small tables for a max of four. This is a... read more

Evening out to catch up with friends. None of had visited this restaurant before but we went on the recommendation of others. A bit further out than we thought but the restaurant was busy throughout the evening. The setting is very nice and can imagine this being a popular haunt in the Spring and Summer when one can eat outside.... More

We have been here quite a few times before and it never disappoints. It has a cosy atmosphere in the restaurant with good service and excellent food. The starters are particularly good and the Venison main was delicious.

Dinner for 4 last night was good in parts and a bit disappointing in others. Starters - Fishcake, angel hair linguini (veggie) and special crayfish - all very good tho' the linguine was tepid. Veggie main Camembert Wellington, sea bass and steak and ale pudding all pretty good. BUT the 12 hour braised beef was awful! Chewy (not sure how... More

After booking in advance we had an excellent lunch at the restaurant in a relaxed environment. The Menu was varied even though it was on a Sunday. The staff were friendly and polite and their service excellent. We will certainly return when in the area again,

We have eaten here six times as a couple, with family and with friends. The meals are mouthwatering regardless of what we chose to order from the menu. So pleased that we discovered it ananda struggle to recommend anywhere better in the location.

We were attending an exhibition at the NEC and staying at one of the neighbouring hotels for a few days. We fancied trying something other than the hotel restaurant for dinner, so not knowing the area at all we took a gamble and searched for nearby restaurants on our sat nav, picking the Malt Shovel simply because we liked the... Been here a little while ago, and were recently passing through the area, so decided to go back. I agree with some of the reviews regarding the number of tables that the owners have packed in, and the service can get stretched at times. But they seem to be able to offer consistently top class, very fresh fish. The whole... More

Interesting menu, good food well cooked and nicely presented. But too many tables in the bar area. Seated in the main corridor the floor shook every time the staff walked past. Take out a couple of tables and give the diners a more pleasant experience.

We've been visiting the Malt Shovel for years and I always hve a great experience. We can be spoilt for choice in this area for good food - Orange Tree, The Farm, The Crabmill - but I always look forward to dining at the Malt Shovel because you're guaranteed a high quality meal. The menu is varied and the specials... More
