Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Excellent find

Visited with a group of six. Fairly small / cosy restaurant but nice atmosphere as a result. Excellent variety of options on the menu with some interesting dishes. Our group tried a number of different dishes including the slow cooked Iberia pig cheeks (fall apart and fabulous), scallops with black... read more

Last minute booking for 6 of us. Really nice inside and service was good. Three course we're enjoyed by all. Toilets were a bit like a transport cafe, but that shouldn't put anyone off going by here. Slightly on the expensive side but would definitely go again

Had yet another superb meal at Iris. This's restaurant has to be praised for consist met,y producing food of the highest quality with really friendly service. The artichokes stuffed with blue cheese and nuts is a favourite and the sea bass en pappiotte a real treat. Thank you, you serve some of the best food I have tried anywhere in... More

This restaurant was recommended to me by a local person in Edinburgh who said we wouldn't find anywhere that offered as good value for money. I was able to book over OpenTable which was helpful. The menu was outstanding and offered some really exquisite options. The staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. We both had starters and mains,... More

I had heard great things about Iris and was looking forward to something special. But all I can say was, it was nice enough but I have been to far more interesting places with imaginative menus and far cheaper. Usual fare but bland. The place is nice and the waiters fine. All in all a very average experience. Disappointing

Excellent meal - just two courses on this occasion. . Shared langoustines then on to the duck. - cooked pink as requested. Compliments to the chef ! A plate consisting of three vegetables including potatoes is priced separately. We had two plates of veg between three which was sufficient. You will be greatly tempted to try something a little bit... More

The menu had so many wonderful appetizers, that we decided to have several small plates for dinner. Everything was very fresh and tasty. Highly recommend.

It was bucketing down with rain and we weren't sure where we wanted to go to, and this place happened to be open so we dashed in to get out of the rain. Boy am I glad we did! The decor was contemporary and the seating comfortable and I liked the look of many of the items on the menu... More

We had read the reviews about Iris which was why we decided to go. It's a nice restaurant with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were friendly but I have to say we found the food very disappointing. We enjoyed our starters but the main courses were a huge let down. My husband and I had the lamb wrapped in pastry... More

Small, intimate setting on Thistle. My wife had a great spinach salad, then a starter of Mussels. The portion was entree size with a rich delicious sauce. I had Monkfish, very nice. The service was very good, but again we were there early evening on a Tuesday night.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
