Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

The layout of Iris is to make it look like rooms which adds a good ambience to the whole experience. The food is DELICIOUS and quite imaginative. As a vegetarian I have ALWAYS been delighted with the choice on offer. Two courses are substantial! The pTrons are very mixed from couples to

We had only three nights in Edinburgh for a first-time holiday, and stumbled upon Iris while looking for a place for dinner. What first attracted us was the amount of people we saw through the window- it was crowded- always a good sign. Wit no reservation at about 8 PM, we got the last table- right by the door. But... Visited here when family were in town. Cannot fault the food - good selection on the menu and all our choices were excellent. Has lost 2 stars for 2 reasons. Firstly, there was an overwhelming smell of cooking from the kitchen to the extent that when we left the restaurant every item of clothing we were wearing was absolutely stinking... More

Visited this restaurant from trip advisor. Booked the day before arrival. Glad I did as its a very busy popular place. Dined at 6pm and was offered the Al la carte & lunch menu offer which ran until 6.30. Decided on the 3 course lunch menu, food fantastic, tasty, fresh & homemade. Service was brilliant, furnishings lovely and overall a... More

We were finishing up a rather sedate pub crawl in the neighborhood and were looking to have a fine final dinner in Scotland. We were squeezed into the only seats left - lucky for sure! The highlights included the duck breast, the sweet and sour tomatoes, and the artichoke and blue cheese salad. Wow - we were so impressed.

We went here for a celebratory family meal. Staff were very attentive and service was exceptional but overall I was a little disappointed. I had heard a lot of hype. The starters were all nice but the chorizo and black pudding is exactly that, this goes for the mains as well. Nothing other than duck in a raspberry sauce on... More

in a city that has many great restaurants this rates as one of the best. What they produce out of the very small kitchen is amazing. The service was excellent considering they where busy and food very good. Well worth a visit and we shall return.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
