Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Great atmosphere and freiendly staff.

Very good food and drink from a limited menu. Personally I like a smaller menu to choose from. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful.

My boyfriend and I visited iris last night and I was so impressed. The restaurant was a little quiet for a Friday night but actually it was nice so we could have a proper conversation. The food was possibly the best I have had in Edinburgh, the chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines was Delicious. The service was great. Overall, i... More

Excellent quality of food that is good value for money. I always go back for their duck which is to die for. I've eaten here many times and never been disappointed.

We had my friends hen party at Iris on Saturday night and it was excellent. The staff were exceptional on the night, they thought of everything. The food was fantastic and great value. I'd highly recommend Iris for large groups.

We booked to go with with a group of friends. After a bit of a pause for our pre dinner drinks there was quite a wait to take our order, not a great problem as we were chatting but long enough to be noticeable. The starters arrived, my friends who had mussels and scallops were pleased with both the cooking... More

We had a very nice meal here with a group if friends on a Saturday night. Scallops (served with their coral thank goodness) with black pudding and a pea purée were a lovely starter, and a 'special' main of venison loin was melt in the mouth. Others had mussels (highly praised), sea bass, duck and chicken. Sides of veg cost... More

I read the TA review and was apprehensive about the service personnel. What a surprise, our server was the loveliest person we've met in Edinburgh. She was young, pleasant, energetic and knowledgable about the menu. However, she went well beyond any scope of responsibility when she ran a block down the street to bring my umbrella that I left at... More

costs about £35 a head for three courses for dinner with wine. Menu offers an excellent range of choice. Every option is really nice. You could chose anything from the menu. It's all good. The whole sea bass was really nice as was the monkfish. Highly recommended.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
