Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

It was nice

in a city that has many great restaurants this rates as one of the best. What they produce out of the very small kitchen is amazing. The service was excellent considering they where busy and food very good. Well worth a visit and we shall return.

Hugely recommend Iris. Fantastic food - I had scallops then sea bass and my partner had partridge then monkfish tail- everything was beautiful. Wish we'd had room for dessert! Lovely, friendly service. Quick and attentive. We were served by Paulina. We felt welcome the second we walked in. Very reasonably priced.. Worth every penny! Will be returning.

Oh my, what a find! Amazing food (we had the lamb and the venison) and my husband is sure that this is the best venison he has ever tasted. The service was excellent without being intrusive - next time we are in Edinburgh, we will book to ensure we are not disappointed as many people were turned away. Thank you... More

Visited with a group of friends for lunch. With 7 people with varying tastes/requirements including gluten free, all had enough to choose from which was great. Food, wine, price and last but not least, staff...all excellent.

Great food, great atmosphere for a quiet Monday night dinner. Took a bunch of discerning foodies out for dinner who were up from London and they were mighty impressed with the food and wine and the decent prices. The lamb wellington is delicious.

Had a great meal. Good selection to choose from. Staff attentive but not too much. Food well cooked. Various wines red and white. Flavoursome Rioja.

My turn to take a friend for lunch. As usual I turned to Tripadvisor for choice. Looked good and it was good! Choice of lunch menu and a la carte. Lots of lovely choice and we went for lunch menu. Both had the French onion soup, I chose Aubergine, quinoa, red pepper and tomato and friend chose the Lamb Patties.... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
