Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Simply wonderful food, well cooked and presented. Good atmosphere in a side street that is not glamorous on first observation but once inside you are in for a treat. The staff looked after diners well and were efficient and very pleasant. For three excellent courses with wine and coffee worked out at £40 pp, highly recommended.

This is the second time I've been to Iris when visiting Edinburgh. The first time, I had a ribeye steak that was the most delicious I'd ever tasted. I usually like a sauce with it but the lemon butter was more than enough to complement the exceptional taste of the meat. It's always dangerous to go back to a restaurant... More

The menu and kitchen clearly are the dominant force. A well conceived offering which would benefit from more exacting execution but clearly has the talent if it can be pressed. Over zealous seasoning let down an otherwise good take on my pheasant special but intrinsically good. Sides are charged for enthusiastically and don't warrant the purchase price.. 6 baby asparagus... Ate here on a Saturday evening during festival, service was painfully slow, by the time the main course arrived, I was so hungry I would have eaten anything. Its a nice place but needs more staff at busy times.

Reading the menu from outside we decided this was the place for lunch and we were not disapointed. Staff were excellent as was the food, well presented and with flavour. Good service, good food and good value.

Iris is a family favourite of ours and this is down to the consistent quality of food they offer. The meat is always cooked perfectly and their veg is usually served with a bit of a twist. The staff are good and it's got a great cosy atmosphere.

This is the perfect place for lunch when wanting a good blether with friends over good food and wine. Their lunch menu is good value, and food excellent quality. I've been here many times with friends, and I've never been disappointed with either the food or the service. I can especially recommend the potatoes (rather than the salad option) to... More

Fantastic meal out for birthday celebration. The food is delicious and we particularly liked the duck and salmon dishes. The roast tomatoes in balsamic glaze is superb too. Very friendly and helpful staff. Thank you!

Considering I am a South African in the UK, @ R20 to the £, everything is expensive, but this was relatively resonance to stomach The selection on the menu, was small enough as to not confuse you, or give too many choices, and yet large enough to satisfy any palate The atmosphere was vibrant and very lively, the service could... Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
