Comfort food in the heart of Edinburgh that is good...not great

We were four for dinner here as recommended by our hotel. Ambiance is welcoming, menu is extensive and the owner circulates and is attentive. We were recommended this restaurant by the hotel reception opposite. It's open fairly late which was the main reason we were searching. It's a big establishment with a big menu. Wait staff seem to be Italian which is refreshing. Prices a little high and not great flair with the food.

The good news is that the food is fine, but not spectacular. There is a constant need to season the food once you are served (in Scotland) as they use no real seasoning. So, it was... More

Food was very tasty, we had gnocchi, penne pollo fungi, and garlic bread (with tiramissu for pud). Uber value for money.... with some similar menus in other places costing half or double the price as this one. Don't be fooled from the street view, it may look tiny and quiet but it's like a rabbit hole - it is quite... More

Really nice place and friendly staff. Tasty food also and would love to go back. Family friendly and decent pricing! Plus nice and central.

Managed to get a table on a Saturday evening without a prior booking, but would definitely recommend booking ahead. When I was there it was very busy and turning away business. Once your meal is served you can understand why it is popular. Not only a great location on Union Place just opposite the Playhouse, but good food, efficient friendly... More

Cross the road and go to A Taste of Italy instead. The food is better. It's better value for money. The staff are friendlier. We were in Giuliano's on Friday and the service was poor. Worse, the manager could have cared less. Go elsewhere and save yourself the disappointment.

It was busy when I arrived and they managed to fit me in at 6pm on a Saturday without a reservation during the festival. Other restaurants were too busy (a clue there maybe?). I just wanted a quick pre-theatre meal, so I ordered bruschetta and cannelloni with a glass of house white. I left less hungry than I arrived, but... More

A lovely Italian restaurant where you get a warm welcome and very polite staff. Arriving late in the evening, was able to get a table without a prior booking. To start had the bruschetta which was very nice. For main I had a chicken pasta dish, which was also very nice and not to big a portion. For drinks we... More

Great restaurant with friendly and cheery staff. Comforting, perfectly served Italian Food. Good variety and always tasty! There is always a great atmosphere in here, especially when there's a show on at the Playhouse. Be sure to book.

Friendly enough staff, but the food is straight out of a Farmfoods or Iceland. I had fish and chips with mixed veg and my partner had a pizza .... both tasteless and left on the plate .... the pint of lager and the bottle of Prosecco came out a bottle, so they managed this okay. If you're going to the... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
