Lunchtime visit with daughter whilst checking out Edinburgh University - very very busy so a bit of a wait. Staff very friendly and upbeat and clearly working hard indeed. When it arrived food was fresh from the oven (not microwave) and delicious. Generous portion and interesting range of dishes on menu. Good food, simply presented, will go again.

We found MUM'S by chance, as it was not recommended by our hotel, but should have been. Just the type of place needed after an afternoon excursion to St. Andrews and without a reservation to dine elsewhere. Food was great and we liked the diner type feel of MUM'S, as well as the service. In between fine dining and overpriced... More

While the menu is rather simple, what I love about Mums is that it lives up to it's name - simple, British, home style cooking at an affordable price! The venison stew is amazing as are the sausages and mash. You can't go wrong really. The only thing I was disappointed in was the cranachan, but sub that for the... More

This is a reasonably priced restaurant with a very courteous staff and a very interesting menu. All the foods were different and we loved our choices. The featured local beers were good too!

MUMS is located in the middle of Edinburgh, somehow half way between the Royal Mile and the Quatermile area. It does not have the look and feel of a traditional British Pub but more like an American Diner. MUMS has 3-4 booths in the front and a couple of individual tables in the back. I was at MUMS for dinner... More

Had some yummy venison stew, my partner had a pie. Both agreed it was lovely. Almost left as it took us a while to get a seat, and the waitress ignored us until one was ready, but the food was lovely so we didnt mind in the end. Would return.

Small yet lovely place to dine, food portion was generous and were charged reasonably. However I was really disappointed with the hot chocolate (cheap-tasting powdered drink, too sweet and didn't even have any garnish on top) and we waiting 45 minutes for our food to come! We had already finished our drinks long ago by then! Gave this a 4... More

Such a lucky find for us, breakfast under £8 and amazing food quality! Just stumbled in off the street, and ate like kings. Highly recommend the vegetarian breakfast! The staff was really good too! Very friendly and definitely more energetic than I have ever felt on a Monday morning. EAT HERE!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
