Description: Set in the heart of Edinburgh is Hanam's Kurdish and Middle Eastern...
Set in the heart of Edinburgh is Hanam's Kurdish and Middle Eastern Restaurant and if you think that's a mouthful, wait until you see what on offer! Voted one of Britain's Top 5 Middle Eastern Restaurants by the Telegraph, owner Ahmed ensures the personal touch, by being there seven days a week to offer advice and banter. The menu offers starters such as falafel and baba ghanoush, main courses that include Kurdish pizzas, vegetarian casseroles and halal meat dishes, such as Kurdish-style lamb biryani. There are also a selection of shish kebabs and desserts. Three courses from this banquet-like menu will cost an average of just £20 per person. And, if you're so inclined, you can even smoke a traditional hookah after your meal.

The Great Escape - from haggis and fried haddock

This restaurant is located just off the Royal Mile, not far from St Giles cathedral. We found out about it by noticing a bloke with a sandwich board on the Mile. It was a great find as its offerings were so different to all the other pubs and restaurantrs in this tourist hotspot. Hanam's offered a... read more

At last the food arrived and we were not disappointed! It was disappointing though that they didn't serve beer... Friendly staff!

Ended up going here because our first choice Oink sold out of food mid day. Opened up tripadvisor and found this spot just steps away from Edinburgh castle. The menu looked great. The food was decent. Service was also good. I think we chose poorly because I didn't love what we had. The lamb kebab was really nice but the... More

Worth walking off the beaten track for a great view, we sat outside, away from crowds & traffic & were well advised by staff on a delicious meal. Definitely be back again.

Wanted a table on a Monday earlish around 5 and they had to check if they could fit us in before busy evening service!! BYOB which makes it a great price but you certainly do not compromise on the food!! I had lamb kebabs and other had chicken with one friend having 2 starters and we all really enjoyed it,... More

Went with a group of friends having been to the location a long time before. Met by friendly staff and shown large table with plenty of room for the group. Location is BYOB and staff immediately offered to store our beer and wine in cooler for us. Also no corkage. Menu extensive. All opted for the kebabs and weren't disappointed.... More

After seeing a sign, and being quite tired of the usual pub fare, we had lunch at Hanam's. Our server was very friendly, had a great sense of humor, and was very accommodating. The food was excellent. Best naan I've ever had. And the mint tea came with a teabag and mint leaves in the cup:) We ordered the hummus... More

Then had mixed main course (can't remember what it was called but delicious, Plenty of meat for 2 cooked to perfection. As other reviewers have stated, does not serve alcohol, but hey so what? I used to love going to this restaurant but I have to say that I'm no longer going to visit this place again because almost every time I've been, we've been told that we need to leave within half an hour as they are fully booked even though it's pretty obvious that the restaurant is half dead. I think they... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
