Description: Set in the heart of Edinburgh is Hanam's Kurdish and Middle Eastern...
Set in the heart of Edinburgh is Hanam's Kurdish and Middle Eastern Restaurant and if you think that's a mouthful, wait until you see what on offer! Voted one of Britain's Top 5 Middle Eastern Restaurants by the Telegraph, owner Ahmed ensures the personal touch, by being there seven days a week to offer advice and banter. The menu offers starters such as falafel and baba ghanoush, main courses that include Kurdish pizzas, vegetarian casseroles and halal meat dishes, such as Kurdish-style lamb biryani. There are also a selection of shish kebabs and desserts. Three courses from this banquet-like menu will cost an average of just £20 per person. And, if you're so inclined, you can even smoke a traditional hookah after your meal.

Perfect, and fast, lunch

I came in for lunch with my mum this afternoon. We both ordered the Merishke chicken kebab, Iranian style. The portion was perfect for lunch, and it came so quickly which is ideal in the afternoon. And chicken was just perfect, it was exactly how I was hoping. The restaurant was quiet and perhaps... read more

The chicken and lamb kabobs were decent. Shrimp was inedible due to salt content. Hummus was good. Naan was great. With all the great food in the area, I would not recommend it.

The sharing platter for four is amazing. We would recommend avoiding a starter though, as there is a lot of delicious food to enjoy.

We stumbled upon this wonderful restaurant walking near the Edinburgh Castle. Great food from a wide variety of choices. Two Londoners and two Americans had excellent lunches. The atmosphere is delightful and very inviting. Service is friendly and quick. I would return — if only it were not so far away.

Excellent service and a delicious meal. We had a lamb dish with spinach which was gorgeous and a chicken shawarma which was very tasty. The Arabic coffee is very good too. Definitely worth a visit!

Visited this restaurant twice in our 5 days of stay with my daughter. Mouth watering food. Very nicely decorated place and the atmosphere is amazing. I would strongly recommend this place. I am a vegetarian and was very satisfied with everything I ordered. I wish they would have alcohol as well with non alcoholic beverages.

Came here after work with a friend and had the set meal for two, amazing! The portions were large, cooked fresh and simply delicious! A lot of food for just two people could easily have fed three and for £35 it was very good value for money. The service was lovely and the decor/ambiance very authentic. Will definitely be back... We have been here many times and are never disappointed! We always go for a meze of the starter and side dishes which are always cooked to perfection. The falafels and barbacued chicken wings are winners! it is also BYOB. Never disappoints!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
