Very good restaurant, great food, friendly staff

We recommended this restaurant by some local friends, it was extremely busy for a monday night (always a good sign) and of all the restaurants that we visited this had the least amount of tourists, so it was definitely on the locals radar. The food was a real blend of different european dishes... read more

I was taken here by faculty who work at the University of Edinburgh, which is right down the block. They clearly think it is good and rely on it. And I certainly understand why they like it. The decor is modern and light. My dinner -- the lamb entree -- was excellent. The meat was perfectly cooked and tender, and... More

The receptionist at our hotel recommended this to us. The price to quality ratio is truly amazing. The bay windows have great views of the castle too.

I recently went to The Outsider to have dinner with a friend. After hearing so many positive reviews about this place, I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. The food was a bit overpriced and was not as good as other restaurants I've been to. I have heard that their lunch menu is fantastic, so perhaps that would have... More

While not the best meal we ate in Scotland, the food was good, reasonably priced and the views are not to be beat. Almost every table sits in sight of windows that look out onto the castle. An excellent spot for families with teenagers as the menu is varied and a good place for a weary traveler on "opening night"... More

A friend and I ate here on a Tuesday night, expecting it to be pretty quiet it was great to see the restaurant was busy and had a real buzz about it! The food was excellent and the staff very attentive. Will absolutely be back for sample more of the menu. Thanks

I visited on a week day lunch time and chose from the incredibly well priced lunch menu. I had sea bass and linguine. This was absolutely delicious and only £6.90. My friends all enjoyed there choices too. This is a lovely restaurant with views at the back to the castle. Service was impeccable. We enjoyed wine and lingered over coffee,... More

Came here for lunch on a whim when in Edinburgh and was very impressed. Delicious meal was had by both myself, who had a sea bass dish, and my boyfriend who opted for venison. We had one of their kebab style starters to share which was full of flavour. The meal was topped off with a brilliant cheese board, which... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
