Great food at good prices

Loved the food here! The chicken and prawn skewers were fab! The chicken was so succulent and the garlic fries are a must! Only disappointment was they ran out of the chocolate and espresso pudding before we could order and we had to sit watching others eat it! Good quality coffees - didn't even... read more

Was recommended to us - probably wouldn't have found it otherwise. Went for Saturday lunch, didn't have a reservation but was given a fantastic table upstairs overlooking the main eating area. The restaurant was busy enough but not full - some groups, some couples. Our waitress was fantastic - friendly, funny, keeping an eye on all the tables, all the... More

This restaurant was packed out on a Monday night and had a really good warm buzz as soon as we entered. Our table of six share 3 different kebab type starters which were reasonable, but not anything special. The mains were better received when they eventually arrived. Huge servings of really tasty food. We sampled lamb, venison, mussels and fish... More

Walked in for lunch without a reservation. Restaurant was busy but we were seated quickly and service was friendly and efficient. I had a venison stew which was excellent. My girlfriend is a vegetarian and found the veggie selection superb, selecting the sweet potato lasagna. Desserts were pretty freaking good as well Vibrant atmosphere, attentive staff, great value for money

I have been going to the outsider for a number of years now and the service is becoming worse and worse. I absolutely love the food and this is what has kept me coming back but I'm starting to question whether it is worth it. Waiters ignore you, take half and hour to bring you bread, don't allocate appropriate cutlery... More

Went here with work colleagues. We had a great evening as the food was superb and the place has an infectious 'buzz' - a really good atmosphere for a Tuesday night. The others all had steak but I opted for the pan fried gnocchi with beets and goats cheese - absolutely delicious.

I've eaten here a few times but have never gotten round to leaving a review. Went for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday and the place was bursting at the seams. This meant a fairly lengthy delay in the food arriving but the staff are so hospitable and friendly it's hard to be too grumpy with them. A Crab and Crayfish... More

The quality and standard of the food you get for the price is unbelievably good with a fantastic view of rooftops, the grassmarket, grayfriers and of cource Edinburgh castle which is especialy nice on a clear day or even a foggy one (very atmospheric). The staff have always been rather friendly and cheery and the room itself is very modern and sleek.... More

Enjoyed an extended lunch with friends here last weekend. Menu is extensive and also includes options that are slightly cheaper. I had a steak sandwich which was lovely and we also got a bottle of house wine which was just ok

We were recommended The Outsider from our nearby hotel. The atmosphere was lovely, a rustic decor and good company. The staff were incredibly friendly and the food was simply delicious. My only suggestion is if you are looking at the puddings, think chocolate.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
