Good food but rather noisy

We went with friends curing the Festival, and had to book well in advance. We sat upstairs, which was still noisy but probably not as bad as being downstairs. The restaurant was very busy, but we were well looked after, and had our two courses plus drinks well within our allotted two hours. They... read more

Quite a trendy place to eat but it appeared to me to have lost it's way compared to previous visits, which is a shame. Overall the staff seemed way to rushed, the food was average, we were placed at a table on the top floor so low ceiling and a little warm !!

Excellent food we visited for lunch and they have good value lunch specials for under GBP10 per person.

A variety of menu. Each dish is cleverly put together with various herbs and condiments. Specials add to fixed prices. Lunchtime main meals around £6/7. Circa. £15/16 evenings. Beautiful and generous deserts. Good portions. Eclectic drinks and liquor list. You could just go for desert and drinks! Clean and tidy though can be rather noisy. Highly recommend.

My friend has had good experiences here in the past, and we went here for a going away dinner. It was packed for dinner, and we had a reservation. One waiter was quite friendly, but the others were not so great. The waitress handed us our meals when they came with barely a word or smile and ran off. My... More

We always visit The Outsider when in Edinburgh, and have so far not been disappointed. We love the decor and the atmosphere (even if it is a little loud) and the food is always very good. We started off with bread and very tasty olives. My husband had a steak as his main course, and I had a lamb dish,... More

I was here today with my boyfriend. Despite it being 1 pm we got a seat immediately. Friendly staff. Nice view of the castle but a bit loud. I had a salad which was delicious. My boyfriend had the burger and said it was dry and nothing special (nothing bad in it, just a bit boring).

This was a lunch for four to get us into the mood for some Edinburgh Festival Fringe treats. It's an informal bistro with an attractive menu with changing specialities daily. The food was good, the wine also good. The service was a little bit patchy but the restaurant was heaving and it wasn't an issue. This was our third visit... More

Really buzzing place and absolutely heaving but then it was a Saturday night. The Maitre D hadn't had great reviews in the guidebooks that we'd read but he was perfectly charming and he quickly showed us to our table at the time we had booked and seated us at a really comfy table at the side of the room. Our... More

Excellent service and menu. Our waitress was very attentive despite it being a busy lunchtime. We really enjoyed our meal - we will be back!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
