Food good, service average

The mussels are a highlight of Ecco Vino, and we recommend them. While a few waiters seemed to be competent, one in particular seemed a tad spaced out, forgetting our order and appearing confused- only happy when they were outside having a fag. The restaurant does have the appearance of being... read more

I love this place. I've been there with my wife, and several other times with friends and it's always a pleasure. The food is interesting and delicious, the wine list broad and well-selected. The staff is consistently friendly, accommodating, and on-point. Even at the busiest times, they remain professional and generally in good spirits (which I know is not always... More

Me and my wife was a victim of the regular Scottish weather, so we needed to find a place for shelter... we dropped in to Ecco Vino by accident, and the place immediately turned out to be my favourite place to eat in Edinburgh. It is a quite small place and possibly in standard Italian style it's certainly not a... More

I'm afraid I will not be going back to this restaurant again. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs. The portion was tiny, not at all worth the price. The meatballs themselves were fine, but the tomato sauce was extremely bland. It's SO easy to make a delicious rich tasty tomato sauce, how can you get it so wrong? It tasted like... More

We popped in here for a quick lunch and soon sat back, relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. The staff are superb, knowledgeable about their wines and keen for you to be pleased with your choice. I had a fabulous Gavi and he had a delicious Puglian negroamaro. We had an antipasti platter to share, some yummy meatballs and bruschetta. We liked... More

I have been there a couple of time and I have found the atmosphere very pleasant, espacially the WAITERS! The service was really good and fast. In general, the quality of the wine is really good and the prices are cheaper compared to other wine bars. However, the price is overridden for that quality. I haven't tried food.

Met an old friend for lunch here. We were welcomed warmly and we enjoyed specials of the day - great risotto for me and mussels for my friend. The wine was delicious and the service excellent. Ecco Vino is just 5 mins from Waverley Station (use Market Street exit).

Our last lunch in Edinburgh before we went home. And the best we had! Good fresh food, very tasty, nice place, many wines to choose with the food. After a lot of (high calorie) pub food (very good food, but it felt as all the same in every place) we were very happy to have some fresh ingredients, very tasty.... More

Had drinks here (no food). Started with a local brewed beer - Caesar August lager/IPO from tap. That was quite tasty and something I would go for again. Afterwards I had a glass of wine. I asked about the Carmeniere 2013 as I previously had some great experiences here. The waiter was honest saying that it was quite nice, but... More

Another good visit to Ecco Vino. Their wine list is extensive; we picked a bottle of one of the the cheaper of the "bolder" reds, it was a good quality wine. Food was delicious - a pasta dish and a risotto, well pricde at £9.95 each. One minor quibble - that the risotto had ingredients different from those on the... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
