Not your usual Indian restaurant, Zest is smart and modern with a terrific menu combining classic and inventive dishes. The decor in this bright, airy, centre-of-town shopfront is clean and open, with white walls, blond chairs, contemporary styling. The menu includes dishes like starter of Zest's own tandoori trout, main course of medium-spicy Jaipuri chicken with fried mushrooms, onions and capsicums with Punjabi masala in thick sauce. Peshwari naan and bhajis are excellent. The service is hip and friendly and the wine list well matched to the flavours. And yes, there is chicken tikka masala, if you must, but this is a great place for exploring new flavours.

We ate at this restaurant late one evening after coming out of a show. The staff were very pleasent and welcoming. We ordered our favourite dishes and found them to be a lot spicier and hotter than we expected. In fact my food was too hot for me to eat and I ended up eating just the rice and naan.... More

A very pleasant atmosphere, accommodating staff. The food was nice enough but nothing exceptional. Starters were nothing out of the ordinary and the curry was okay.

Conveniently located just of York Place, close to the centre of Edinburgh. Friendly staff with usual choice of Indian meals. Food was ok, not a bad choice if you feel for Indian.

I was recommended Zest from a client at work calling this his favourite restaurant and after visiting this place, I am not surprised! Staff were very welcoming upon arrival and food surpassed expectations. Have been once after and will continue to visit.

Loved the food here. Being an indian, i usually eat other cuisines when out of the country, but am glad i made an exception here. The food at Zest was healthy, tasty, well-cooked and perfectly seasoned, and the service was great. Must try: the Prawn Puri.

Visited Zest with a colleague during recent business trip to Edinburgh. Received a friendly welcome on arrival, the young waiter was extremely courteous. The interior decor is modern and tastefully decorated. We were given ample time to select our meal, the menu included dishes unique to Zest. The food was excellent as was the attentive service throughout the evening.

Just a little bit downhill from the St Andrew Square tram stop. The food was your regular Indian fare but was really tasty. Don't remember if they specialised in a specific cuisine. Service was friendly and quick. Would go back.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
