Not your usual Indian restaurant, Zest is smart and modern with a terrific menu combining classic and inventive dishes. The decor in this bright, airy, centre-of-town shopfront is clean and open, with white walls, blond chairs, contemporary styling. The menu includes dishes like starter of Zest's own tandoori trout, main course of medium-spicy Jaipuri chicken with fried mushrooms, onions and capsicums with Punjabi masala in thick sauce. Peshwari naan and bhajis are excellent. The service is hip and friendly and the wine list well matched to the flavours. And yes, there is chicken tikka masala, if you must, but this is a great place for exploring new flavours.

It was my first visit at ZEST and I had ZEST special Lamb Shank. The Best Lamb Shank I ever had in Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. Friendly service, good atmosphere and the prices are very very reasonable. There are few unusual dishes in the menu such as P297 Special, Sir Wallet Scott Lamb Shorisha, Salmon 65 which I could't taste... More

I am not a specialist in Indian cuisine and I can't say if it was the best Indian I 've ever had. But it tasted right to me! I enjoyed all of my dishes same as my partner did. Very nice staff, warm and helpful. I don't find a reason why not to go back again, so if there's a... More

We had a gorgeous meal here recently. It was very busy but they fit us in even though we didn't have a reservation, probably advisable to book a table. The food was gorgeous and the atmosphere was good, the staff were all very friendly. Totally excellent

Zest is an excellent place to eat This is in Edinburgh's new town and it's location is excellent for sightseers and shoppers alike. The lunchtime menu is varied and is excellent value. The service is friendly and very attentive. I have to make one point I respect the min price as they have limited seating and zest gets very busy... More

Eaten here twice recently and the foods varied terrible and quiet good. There's a good choice but it's slightly over priced considering the quality. Gives the impression of all being reheated/frozen/premade/bought in and only assembled on site. The staff try very hard, not always getting it right but trying. Would go back for a basic lunch sandwich etc but not... More

This restaurant was recommended to us by an Indian friend of ours, and we were not disappointed in any shape or form. From the moment we walked through the door, the service was exemplary. We weren't planning to stay too long, we were eating prior to a performance at the Edinburgh Playhouse. The meal itself was one of the finest... More

Myself and a friend were looking for a place for dinner on a monday night. We found Zest and whilst the layout of the restaurant may not be the most fancy place you can dine in, the food quality and service was top class. Would definitely recommend the specials. Price paid was in line with expectations for an Indian restaurant,... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
