Memorable flavours and world-class cuisine. A truly outstanding culinary experience, worthy of its Michelin star for the 13th consecutive year. As one of the finest Edinburgh restaurants, 'Number One' presents an innovative blend of Scottish and French flavours. Saute Foie Gras with duck confit. Borders lamb, broad beans and grelot. Rhubarb and white chocolate panna cotta. Take a seat on the golden banquettes and sample some of Scotland's most creative dishes from our tasting menus. Equally striking are the original artworks from The Royal College of Art that hang on the red lacquered walls.

We were taken for a 'Big Birthday' treat, and what a treat it was! Beautifully decorated rooms, lovely napery and glassware, attentive but not intrusive service, tables well enough spaced that you could hear your companions. Oh, and did I mention the food? Visited with my wife, sister and brother in law. Tried the tasting menu with matched wines. Superb. Scallops, grouse etc. Super service and chef accommodated my wife's wheat allergy with aplomb. Her own gluten free raspberry soufflé. Until next time.

This has to be one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. The service is first rate, not overbearing, and the food wonderful both in presentation and content. The dining room is always beautifully presented and can knock spots off a similar subterranean Michelin-starred restaurant in London. It made a special occasion memorable and should definitely be a first choice for... More

We spend an evening here after a day of festival shows and enjoyed the use of the spa while staying. It's a great place to eat with a good menu. Service is second to none and it's in the heart of Edinburgh.

A perfect Edinburgh experience and worth every penny. The location and the choice was ideal for our family celebration. We were looked after very well by the waiting staff from start to finish and had all courses fully explained. I especially enjoyed the cheese trolley to finish.

Lovely ambience, excellent wine list and the Scottish take on Michelin dining was just sensational. The Partridge (Main Course) was perfectly executed and one of the best plates of food my husband and I have ever had. We shall definitely be back!

Service was excellent, but ambiance was plain and food was nothing to talk about. When you go to a Michelin star restaurant you expect something exceptional. There was nothing special about this place.

We ate at Number One during our annual trip to Edinburgh for the Festivals and amongst all the other great things on offer in the city at this time of year, this meal was, for us, one of the highlights. Our evening scores 5 out of 5 on all aspects of the dining experience. From the moment we were shown... More

This restaurant is at the very top end of Edinburgh restaurants and should be on the list for a special occasion. There is an atmosphere of style and sophistication which is fully reflected in the quality of the menu and the attentive service. Better not to worry too much about the bill although on this occasion we were treated by... More

At £70 per head (not including drinks!) this is certainly not cheap, but it was absolutely worth it. The squab pigeon to start was superb and my partner tells me their salmon is out of this world. The atmosphere was also great and the staff couldn't be more pleasant. I'd certainly class this place as Number 1

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighborhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
