Off-the-charts meals but VERY expensive!

I brought my two college student sons here during our trip to the U.K. for our "splurge" meal--and at 70 British pounds (about $109 U.S.) per person prix fixe (beverages not included), it is indeed breathtakingly expensive. However, we all agreed that this ranked among the Best Meals Ever, with... read more

My wife and I had dinner at Number One Tuesday night, what an experience, from the greeting to the goodbye it was outstanding. The chefs creations are beyond belief with each serving better than the last, the raspberry soufflé was the highlight of the meal. This restaurant has to be one of the finest in All of the United Kingdom.... More

What a wonderful evening! Advised and escorted by excellent servers and sommelier, the Number One chef took us on an exciting Scottish food tasting experience. We opted for the four-course version, which that night included a specialty smoked salmon, day scallops, hoggett, and finished with fresh strawberries.

My husband & I celebrated our anniversary here on a Monday night. I have never really given this restaurant much of a thought before- I think because it is located in the 5* Balmoral hotel I was under the misapprehension it would be rather pretentious. As it was the only michelin starred restaurant in Edinburgh open on our anniversary (all... More

I took my wife for our anniversary and the experience was second to none. We both had the chefs taster menu with the prestige wine selection and we could not fault a thing. We will make an effort to visit again in the future.

We had an enjoyable evening at Number One. The food is perfect, interesting and delectable. The wine pairings with the tasting menu are interesting and the sommelier adds to the experience measurably. The service was impeccable.....attentive but not smothering, friendly, polite and warm. It was a genuinely delightful evening.

It has been a while since we had a sommelier who knew his stuff, but here he did! We ordered the wine pairing with our 7 course menu and with each glass he took the time to explain in detail what we would be drinking and why, and also answered all our questions. On top of that the food was... More

I would have given this 5 stars but for 2 small issues. The restaurant provides the professionalism & high standards you would expect from a michelin starred restaurant along with friendly service that transforms what could be a formal stiff dinner into a relaxed & relaxing experience. I started with the scallops on puy lentils. The dish also came with... More

Visited number one as a treat and the food was superb. Having the tasting menu we particularly enjoyed three courses. The smocked salmon, beef main and dessert. Whilst none of them blew me away like castle terrace did, I enjoyed everything and for anyone wanting incredibly good, non fussy food number one will deliver. The dessert was a particular delight... We dined at Number 1 while staying at the Balmoral for my husbands birthday. The food - we had the tasting menu (but no wine), and the food was amazing, as was the service. The restaurant also gave us a tray of home made chocolates with a birthday greeting, which was an unexpected and much appreciated touch.

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighborhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
