Established in 1963, Scotland's first vegetarian restaurant is still proudly serving fresh, wholesome and tasty food. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or visit our deli shop for some takeaway and a loaf from our onsite organic bakery. Our restaurant is set up cafeteria style during the day and offers table service after 5pm, for a relaxed and informal dining experience, featuring live music every night, it's perfect for children, families, young and old, and still run as Janet Henderson envisioned 50 years ago.

Great breakfast

Just had a great 'full vegan' cooked breakfast. The vegan haggis was lovely and the portion size was unbelievable. Thought £9 was a bit expensive until the full plate arrived in front of me. Only criticism was the ice cold soya milk 'split' when added to my coffee but it's a common problem and... read more

My friend and I were visiting the capital for just the day, it had been raining all morning, and were really hungry. We'd already planned on visiting this restaurant, and when we went in my friend wasn't sure about the size of the main course portions (again, we were famished) but in the end we picked the main course and... Brilliant venue with delicious food - so good that EVERYTHING is veggie, so we could have anything we laid our eyes on! Great takeaway options, too, if you're in a rush.

Very nice food, well prepared and at decent price. Tried the hummus, the polenta tower and the choklate nut cake, all very tasty!

I have had the opportunity to visit Henderson's for breakfast, lunch & dinner over the last 7 years. The bistro is maybe the most acceptable place to have food. The cafe's manager is grumpy & not helpful. The owners are absolutely crazy. They seem to think that hanging over your shoulder will make your experience special.. I like my space!... More

I am unable to comment on the past 7 years of your experiences. I can only mention that your comments are incredibly disappointing and surprising given the current feedback I am receiving from other customers. I should also mention that we have been under new management as of the start of the year but are still very much the family-owned... More

Thank you for your review and your recommendation. We will certainly look into adding more options to our non dairy milk choices. In the mean time our new vegan restaurant around the corner on Thistle Street has various different choices including almond milk on offer right now. Hope to see you back again soon! Kind regards, Mike. More

Food was average. Server looked like she was having a bad day which unusual since most servers wherever we visited were pleasant and polite.

We've only quite recently gone vegetarian and are finding out about veggie restaurants. Hands down, the meal we had last night in Henderson's was the best we've had. We had red pepper hummus, satay skewers, asparagus risotto, cherry pie, blueberry vegan ice cream, and coffee - every single thing was great, couldn't have been better. Service was phenomenal too and... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
