We have eaten here twice - and enjoyed it very much both times. It is relaxed and informal - but also characterful and fun, so you feel you have had an evening out. The staff are really friendly and helpful. We had a very good meal with a couple of glasses of wine and coffee for about £30.00. The baked... More

I was hungry after a business meeting and was walking down Lothian Road and saw the sign for Henderson's Cafe under St John's Church. You are greeted by the lovely undercroft of the church, and lovely staff. I was advised to try their new salad with quinola (I think) it was fantastic as was the Spanish Fritatta. Coffe was also... A lovely situation at the corner of Princes St and Lothian Road, caters very well for vegetarians. Great sort of cavern feeling beneath the church, good solid wooden tables and excellent service. Always good food with a smile and a joke.

Edinburgh has limited options for vegetarians and even less for vegans. Hendersons provides solid fare in a cafeteria type setting. Can be a bit hectic but staff are helpful and food is good.

Just popped in here for coffee between visiting attractions. Sat outside and enjoyed a pleasant coffee.

I found a worm (still wiggling) in my quinoa and rocket salad. The staff refunded my money and asked if they could offer me something else to compensate for the discovery of the worm. The food that I had tasted up until then was superb. The worm put me off eating at St Johns again.

We stopped for a light lunch - the food was very good and all vegetarian, but there was so little seating that it was very difficult to find anywhere to sit to eat it (there was quite a lot of seating outside, which would be great on a sunny day, but it was raining... Hard).

This is in the vaults below St Johns Church so a very unusual location. It was festival time when we visited and although there is normally a queue to get in there was none this time. We got served fairly quickly and the food was reasonable but nothing outstanding. There usually a queue for the toilets as they are accessible... More

I decided to pop in for breakfast as I left home in a rush. ..so I thought given the vegetarian/health food theme I could satisfy my hunger with a bowl of porridge. The porridge itself was cooked perfectly but I feel that the option for "toppings" at £1 extra is a bit lack-lustre....I was expecting seeds, dried fruit, other wonderful... More

I tend not to review places unless I absolutely love them - I really like giving the five stars! I'm reviewing Henderson's restaurant at St John's because of what it could be, rather than what it is. Starting with the space: it's located in the busy west end of Princes St, yet incredibly quiet. The shadowy basement of the church... More
