A hidden gem

5 of us ate here and all thoroughly enjoyed the food. In the party were 1 vegetarian and one gluten free diet which were both catered for fully. My coeliac friend often struggles to find much choice on a menu. Tonight she had too much! The pre dinner menu for £12.95 was excellent value and 3... read more

Went here to sample the 5pm menu. Service was good, as were starters. Main course, we were not impressed. Having been to Guilianos, Taste Of Italy, Amarmone, Vittoria & Favourita, this place has a long way to go to be anywhere near as good as the competition.

I was there with my wife two weeks ago, and must say we really enjoyed the meal at Asti. If you're looking for an italian restarurant in Edinburgh this is the place to go. I had seabass for my main course and polenta as starter and it was all delicious. Also my cannoli that I had as a dessert was... More

Second time we have had lunch in this restaurant, & once again we were not disappointed. A pre theatre lunch. We chose the Lobster ravioli from the special menu..... it was DELICIOUS, we shared a main portion as a starter, would also recommend the chicken & Parma ham. Staff helpful in choices as always & so reasonably priced. Will come... More

Just dropped in here on the off chance with hubby and son. Simple and comfortable, the service was friendly and the food really tasty and pretty good value. Very nice Italian cooking with great meat and fish options - not all pizza/pasta.

Went for a quick meal before the cinema at Omni Centre. Staff friendly, engaging and attentive throughout our visit. Good wine and excellent food at a reasonable price. Will definitely go back for a less rushed meal.

Love this Restaurent, and I'm made to feel like I'm at home! Generally a great selection of wine at varying price points, a number of great dishes on the menu and on the specials board.... And if they don't take your fancy the staff are more than helpful when trying to come up with a solution! A small Restaurent with... More

We came across this lovely little place for breakfast when out walking on Sat morning. Food was excellent and staff lovely. It was v busy but no wonder - we were seated in the back room with the sun shining through large window overlooking garden area. The dinner menu looked appetising so looking forward to trying it out next time... More

Asti is a lovely wee restaurant down Broughton Street, off York Place,Edinburgh. Our waiter was excellent, attentive but not overbearing and he was able to explain all the dishes. I'm allergic to onions which make me very sick and this is usually a challenge to restaurants but when I asked if there were onions in the tomato sauce with the... More

Others have recommended the rice ball with mozzarella and tomato...so do I...excellent. And the gnocchi with tender lamb was superb. Welcome big portions from the Sicilian lady chef. A good selection of puddings but you probably won't have space ! Very friendly and helpful service.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
