We recently had dinner at Asti. The staff were friendly and the menu was really good. We all ordered and everyone's meals came out...except mine. After waiting 10 minutes - I asked where it was as everyone else had started eating. They then realised that they had made a mistake. I was surprised that the waiter who brought all the... More

I don't know how they've managed to get everything so right in this small restaurant on the edge of the New Town, but they have! And in spades! Perfect ambiance; friendly, welcoming and efficient staff; an interesting and imaginative menu encompassing meals, snacks and excellent breakfasts; sensible wine list; superb coffee; an inviting price point. We found this place when... More

A lovely quite atmosphere, the early pre theatre menu was excellent value for money. All members of the group enjoyed their meal. A good choice for an Italian pasta meal in Edinburgh.

The hosts at our B&b recommended this restaurant and we were so happy they did. We ended up eating there 3 days of our 6 day visit to Edinburgh. The food was excellent and reasonably priced, and the atmosphere was very nice. We will return if we are ever fortunate enough to return to Edinburgh.

We had the pre theatre menu and the choice was good. The pasta and risotto was made to perfection. Chocolate cake with ice cream ends the meal nicely. Friendly staff.

Lovely coffee, pleasant surroundings, a good, well priced place for a coffee, They also had a tempting menu with sweet and savory dishes - but we will try those on our next visit as time was tight!

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
