very good quality of food specially sushi, sushi's are not only original they are also extremely flavorish and highly tasty and fresh, made a la minute. the sushis really do deserve an outstanding mark! The service however could be highly improved: after waiting 10 minutes at the reception I had to stop a waitress to ask her if anyone would... More

Simply, this is one of my very favourite sushi restaurants. We have been lucky to have never reserved but always (just) managed to swing a seat. However, if you have the choice, I'd recommend a seat at the bar so you can watch the chefs meticulously prepare and check each dish as it goes out. The salmon nigiri is the... More

You know, the reason the bill ramped up in here for us was that we kept ordering more! So easy to do. Okay, not the cheapest way to eat interestingly in Edinburgh but if you're a sushi fan it might just be the best in the city.

We really enjoyed our meal here, I'm a massive fan of sushi! A bit overpriced, but the freshness and the flavour made up for it! Thanks!

We've been to several other sushi venues in Edinburgh, which we like, but Kanpai is our new favourite. We experienced pleasant service, and sublime food (we'd particularly recommend the octopus fish cakes, the kanpai roll and the salmon panko maki), all in clean, chic, modern surroundings. Ideally suited for a pre-theatre meal, across from the Lyceum.

The cold crab side dish was made up of mostly onions and sprinkled with some crab meat which wasn't all that fresh. Sushi rolls were rather loose and definitely did not have authentic combinations of ingredients. Gyoza was good and probably the best dish in our meal, unfortunately. Very average and would not recommend to those who want authentic Japanese... More

I thought the food was great but for the amount of food I had, it was overpriced. The service was great even though the waitress got my order wrong but was corrected later on. Might return.

Stopped by for a dinner, was not sure I was on the right track as it is situated on a "side road" and carry a discrete facade. However - when seated - you are in for a treat. Fresh, delicate and beautiful. Just as the japanese cuisine is at it best. Keep in mind, you need to make a reservation... More

Been now twice, fist visit was good and the good was excellent. But this time, rude staff, maybe they think they're above their station. Won't return, won't recommend again! Very disappointing.

Staying in West End

Neighborhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighborhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theaters and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
