Visited Edinburgh for a family city break and being lovers of Japanese food especially sushi we pre-booked a table at the Kanpai. After a whole days sightseeing we walked to the restaurant via the castle and Grassmarket. It was easy to find on a basic tourist map and within easy walking distance of the all the main attractions. The restaurant... More

We really love the sushi rolls, but everything is good ranging from the octopus fish cakes through tempura, sashimi and sushi. The prices, given the freshness of the ingredients, are very reasonable, service is friendly and caring, and the choice of food is great for both large and small appetites.

This is an absolutely superb restraint, hidden away in the lothian road area of Edinburgh. We booked our table earlier in the day, when we arrived we discovered that there had been some confusion regarding our booking, despite being very busy the staff were extremely polite, calm and reassuring. They made a big effort to seat us, first at the... More

Recommendation by a friend, our best meal during our trip to Edinburgh. High quality of japanese dishes, nice atmosphere, staff very pleasant and helpful.

Not just my opinion, but that of my guest, a 70-year-old Japanese gentleman. This place is exceptional. And the service is also first class - during Edinburgh Festival they still made the effort to find us a table for an hour, early evening, without a booking. Highly recommended.

This restaurant has a very nice atmosphere, the food is always great. Perfect if you're in the mood for something a bit different from the usual japanese dishes you find everywhere else.

We went to eat here on a recommendation by a friend and I was not disappointed. The fish was fresh, the selection unique but with most of the staple favourites. If your friends don't like the idea of raw fish, then there is still a good selection of cooked and vegetarian. But come on, we are all going to visit... More

This is probably one of the best Japanese restaurants we have ever been to. The food is to die for. Service is top. If this restaurant were to be in my town It would definitely be my favourite one.

I booked a 1.45pm table for lunch and was told that last orders would be at 2.15. On arriving there was a certain amount of confusion over the booking (I could clearly see my first name on the 'list') and we were eventually shown to our seats in this attractively presented restaurant at 1.50. We were given the menus and... More

We were walk-in customers with no reservation. The waiter insisted that the restaurant was fully booked but seemed pretty confused after spending 5 minutes staring at the reservation list. Another waitress came along and quickly offered us a seat. The somewhat confused waiter then took our order but was obvious that he was not confident in his English. Food came... More
