Excellent food and service

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at the Gurka Cafe. The restaurant staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was very tasty with extremely generous portions. I recommend the chicken mo mo to start and then the Poleko Bhale Kukhura. All Edinburgh residents should try eating here at least... read more

They advertise that they offer Nepalese and Indian food. When I have had Nepalese elsewhere, it has seemed to me that the flavour palette is a bit different from the Indian one, and excellent. But here the two seemed to me to have merged together. It was pretty good Indian food, although the sauces seemed to me to be pretty... More

It is difficult to write too much of a review as we did not manage to dine. Knowing it was the rugby weekend and we were a group of 10, we booked a table in advance. When we arrived - punctually - there was no table for us, the place was heaving and people were queuing to get in. The... More

Had dinner there on a private trip to Edinburgh with a friend. The place was booked very good and during the evening it was filled up relatively quick. The food was really excellent, with the right touch of spices, wonderful Apricot Nan-Bread and the rice with Coconut was also great. The service was quick and friendly. Can definitely recommend this... More

Another excellent dinner with my brother. Since discovering this restaurant we have both become big fans and it is now our restaurant of choice when we meet. Very good fragrant and subtlety spiced food, quite different from the typical Indian restaurant. Service is always efficient and friendly. Highly recommended.

Had to gently persuade my other half that we should book here (having read other reviews) - it doesn't look much from the outside and the menu at first glance might not seem the most exciting. So glad we did - just stunning from start to finish. We tried the Indian red wine - unusual but very good, worth giving... More

Had a fantastic meal here, service first class and food is amazing. Friendly very polite staff and always smiling. The only downside is, if you have a seat near the door you have people hanging around your table waiting to be seated while you're eating as its very small. Booking in advance is advisable as it gets very busy.

When we arrived it was like Kings Cross Station!! A large party had arrived so it took a while for a table, they even sat us with another couple while they were eating poppadom's!! Fantastic food though and a good atmosphere. Would highly recommend and definitely go back

Five of us went for a meal to a busy place at 7pm. Just as well we had booked because there were five of us, but there were still couples arriving and managing to get a table. The food was excellent and a bit different from a 'normal' curry. Luckily we decided just to share three starters or there would... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
