Delicious lunch before a talk about India at the Book Festival

We were going to a talk at the book festival called 'Out of India' and decided to eat at the Gurkha Cafe before we went. We had plain poppadoms and a pickle tray - there was a red dip that was very nice, a mango and a yoghurt and mint. We all chose something different for our main courses... read more

Great place. Hadn't had a good curry on the trip and this was no let down. Food was delicious and definitely worth the 5 stars

Great Indian restaurant. I loved the butter chicken and the garlic naan was great. Mango Laci was ok and the kids meal had some international options as well.

I thought the place looked good and was very clean. The waiters were friendly and helpful. The starters were excellent but over seven pounds for 2 prawns is excessive. The lamb main dish was substantial but the fish main was not enough. Overall I would say a 4 but expense brought the review down.

This is a personal favourite of ours. Been on numerous occasions and have not once experienced a bad meal. The staff are always lovely and comparable to other Edinburgh prices you really can't complain. The quality of the food is excellent and you can be sure of a good night!

We just had lunch, but the good was excellent! Nice level of spice very well prepared. Nice portions. The garlic naan is some the best I've had. Light and delious!

We loved this restaurant. The gentleness of the staff and the fragrant spicing of the food was excellent. I could taste each vegetable in the mixed bed curry along with the amazing sauce, that I am trying to re- create at home. Definitely the best veg curry I have ever eaten. My son had a traditional lamb dish which was... More

This was our second year at the Fringe with Scottish friends and our third visit to this nice little restaurant. Quality is good, staff are friendly, service is fast and prices very acceptable. Not a lot more to say!

Our fourth year to the Fringe Festival and our third to this lovely restaurant and we weren't disappointed. After two full on days of shows we were a little exhausted and a tasty, leisurely meal, with attentive service and delicious food was exactly what we needed to recuperate. The apricot naans were a particular favourite - but everything was delicious.... More

Good quality, welcoming servers and reasonably priced for the Fringe. Helpfully offer a choice of mild or medium hot with several of the curries.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
