Great spot if hankering for Italian in Edinburgh!

First time in Edinburgh and compared to London where I've always been struck by how many hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurants are rather nice. Few Italian places to be found, it seemed in five days, in Edinburgh, but this is a very good one. Lively place, great/friendly service. Be aware...if... read more

the service was, fine But the food was not good quality the fillet steaks where so tough to eat even the well done fillet, was not edible. the least they could have done was to discount the final bill ,as we spent a large amount of money there I would not recommend this restaurant very disappointed. customer

Whilst on a weekend break, we used trip advisor to select an Italian restaurant in Edinburgh, La Lanterna came up with good reviews, being a family run restaurant always appeals. We nearly walked past it as it is hidden away on the lower floor under another bar on Hanover Street. I am so glad we didn't, we were welcomed by... More

really disappointed with this restaurant as it was recommended to us. It looks like it has new owners. Granted they did have trouble with their waste water system that night but the service was terrible and they started serving us with water before even taking our drinks order!!! They need a system so they have an idea of orders for... More

Really nice Italian hole-in-the-wall style restaurant. We got a great welcome and were looked after by very attentive staff. Food was superb. We had a range of things from the menu and all were terrific and authentically, rustically Italian.

10 of us went for dinner & overall was a bit dissappointed. Food was OK & service was OK, so overall I would just vote this OK maybe expect to much but have been to the one in Glasgow bearing same name & would place it way ahead of this one.

The service was excellent and the food was delicious. They have an amazing offer of a three course lunch for £3.95 which turned out to be an excellent deal and the food was as good as any other I've tasted in an Italian restaurant. Highly recommended.

I took my partner here for his Birthday while visiting Edinburgh. I chose the restaurant just from Google. What a great choice! We were very warmly welcomed by the owner on arrival, and passed the drinks menu straight away. I chose a dish from the specials board - lobster ravioli which was delicious! We had a 3 course meal +... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
