La Laterna is a simple, lovely Italian restaurant. Waiters are helpful and will try to accomodate you if you do not have a reservation. The food is very good, simple but high quality. The after dinner epresso though, is not up to standard for an Italian.

We have dined in this restaurant several times (see previous reviews) in the evenings and always have enjoyed our experience. However, this time we decided to go for lunch on a Friday, We were told there were no special lunch menus and were quite happy to pay full price as per evening as we had always had lovely food and... You immediately feel the typical Italian hustle and bustle of this warm and friendly place. Service was efficient, Waiters were pleasant and welcoming. Food was lovely, nothing to complain about at all. All the food is freshly prepared including had cut chips!!!,. We normally eat at another established Italian restaurant in the city, but this wee gem will definitely have... More

Came here during the fringe festival to be met by a friendly and welcoming reception by the host or manager. Staff where attentive and the food was great. Tried the lobster ravioli the waiter recommended and it was superb. My husband had the risotto and scampi (agli possibly!) and really enjoyed it too The home made cheese cake was equally... More

Staff friendly but not attentive, food was of poor quality. Sorry to say that this is the first and last time we will visit this restaurant.

We chose to eat here on our first night in Edinburgh and were immediately given free garlic bread, which was nice, followed by a glass of red wine on the house - the wine was actually so good that we then ordered more! There was a good choice on the menu & my lobster ravioli was delicious. The staff were... More

To be recommended. Greeted in true italian style and given some lovely food. Freshly cooked and excellent quality. I would go out of my way to eat here again.

I booked a meal here on vacation based on reviews, but was roundly disappointed. On a positive note, we did not get sick. I had the Chicken Cacciatore, which was a nondescript chicken filet in a Tesco-generic marinara sauce, loaded with cheap olives. There were two slices of green onion and one of onion for character. The salad was much... More
