We visited here on a Friday night hoping for some good Italian food. From the outset our experience was poor. We were squeezed onto a table right at the back between the bar and the dessert fridge. We were kindly handed the menu, which looked alright. The drinks menu took another 10 minutes. We ordered calamari to start which was... More

Not a good experience at La Lanterna I'm affraid. Firstly, the restaurant is dirty and the decor is looking tired. The toilets being especially dirty, they appeared not to have been cleaned for some time. I had to send my steak back as it was over cooked. I also had to send back a side order of veg. Even when... We booked this restaurant for a special meal as we all like Italian food and thought we wouldn't go wrong with this long-standing family owned restaurant. We were last there years ago but nothing has changed, same rather cramped set-up with furniture in need of a make over but with old fashioned charm. The first sign that the evening wasn't... More

Had dinner here last night with friends. It had been a while since my last visit. Absolutely amazing. Food was fresh and perfect. The specials board was excellent. Great service and atmosphere. Highly recommended 🍾

Decided to visit here based on the reviews! Sadly we were disappointed. The restaurant was very busy, which is a good thing, but very noisy. We were seated and then it must have been 10 minutes before we were given menus and asked if we would like a drink. We finally ordered our meals and a bottle of wine. Our starter... More

Cosy basement restaurant managed to squeeze us, a party of 12 in easily. Great food, great ambience, great staff. All food hot and tasty, will definitely be back soon! Thanks!

A hair was found in one of our dishes. The food was below average despite being above averagely priced. We ordered 3 different risotto dishes - the risotto rice was not arborio (as specified on the menu) but long grain white rice. The 3 dishes were also extremely similar despite being different on the menu. For the price paid, this... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
