Excellent food and buzzing atmosphere!

Chose to queue up for a table during the Edinburgh Festival. Only sampled the Festival menu, but food was excellent, and despite being so busy the staff might a real effort.

The food was OK, but not great. The real problem was the service, which was very poor, and the general attitude of the staff. The place was busy, but any experienced restaurant would be bale to plan for this and have trained staff who were able to cope. We had to hassle for everything - not a good experience.

We had a really lovely meal here before going to a show. The service was friendly and efficient, and the food was wonderful. Definitely recommend it.

Restaurant was very very busy and we were told there would be a 5 minute wait. In hindsight the manager should have stalled us a bit longer as the service was not good. I ordered a diet coke and received a coca-cola, then the starter arrived and it was wrong. When we realised we told the waitress that we ordered... More

So pleased to go back to Beirut Express. We ordered from the hot and cold starters menu. Everything was really good and reasonably priced. Remember to bring your own wine or beer if you want it. Great welcoming service. Plenty to eat. All good.

The waiter didn't write down our order which I found a little unusual and wondered if when the food was brought calamity would ensue but thankfully it didn't. I went with a group of friends and unfortunately as it was Festival season the traditional mezes were not available. never mind , we just ordered a succession of starters and shared... More

The food is lovely, service reasonably fast, excellent value for money. It gets quite busy at dinner time. Open all afternoon which is great when at the fringe.

OK we were glad to get a table for dinner without reservation during the Fringe festival, but I guess there's a reason why any Edinburgh restaurant isn't full during August. The food, whilst not expensive, was average at best. At the time we wanted a quick, cheap meal - and this we got. If you want something better, look (and... More

I had never been to a Lebanese restaurant before and, being a big fan of Ottolenghi's cookery books, I was very keen to try this place. We decided to share a variety of starters and the food was just delicious. Hummus, flatbreads, lamb meatballs (which we ordered more of), a gorgeous aubergine dip, fattoush salad, mini cheese pastries. I adore... More

Visited on spec during the Fringe Festival. 4 of us needed some quick food between shows. The place was full and we were told 5 minutes for a table. And it was. Decent selection including vegetarian moussaka which two of our party liked, despite it not being like a traditional moussaka (no topping). Each of the 3 meats in my... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
