Understated facade but well worth seeking out.

Booked dinner during the Edinburgh Festival. Pleasantly surprised that we got a last minute booking for 5 people however I think this may be down to the fact that the Hotel is quite low profile as it doesn't have a big "street frontage". We chilled in the bar before dining in the bistro. Great... read more

Group of friends, pre-Fringe show for dinner. The food is very decent once you get past all the foibles of whoever manages this place. It's a shame that the management isn't quite right because it really lets down what could be a very good place. Here's the silliness of the place: Prohibition #1: Sat outside in courtyard for a pre-dinner... More

Came across the bistro whilst at the Fringe. The food was lovely and the selection and recommendation of wine was excellent - recommend the steak frites. Would definitely visit again.

We were a party of six, here for The Edinburgh Fringe, so since we had a performance to attend at 10:45pm we booked dinner at 8:30. Everyone of the party had stayed in other Hotel Du Vin's and one couple had eaten here before. Firstly the waiter took ages to take order then the wine arrived and starters shortly after,... More

I had heard a lot about the Hotel du Vin chain, not least from fellow students at the Edinburgh summer school I was attending, so I was pleased and looking forward to the arranged meal that was being put on for us there. I knew that for one reason or another this particular venue was arranged at short notice but... More

we had lunch outside in a small patio. there is a short menu and it is really really expensive for the typical pub food they offer. although the burger was very good (perfectly cooked steak mince) IT COST £18!!! Huge portion of chips. I suppose to try and justify the price. Sandwiches were around £8 upwards! and they were really... More

we saw a board advertsing bar lunch specials including a glass of pinot outside this hotel and decided as it was a sunny day we would have lunch outside. We were giving a seat and ordered some water and then we were given the menu which did not have the menu advertised when we asked about this we were told... More

We ate at this restaurant in August 2015. The menu described lovely dishes and we decided to have the venison although it was expensive, when it arrived it was very dry and the kitchen had run out of the vegetable accompaniment. For desert I ordered the chocolate mousse which was a large portion topped off with loads of whipped cream... More

Visited recently for a late lunch during the fringe. We wanted to grab a decent bite between performances so plumped for here. The food was tasty but was only made acceptable by the addition of two side salads at £4 each!! I didn't really appreciate the automatic addition of a service charge.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
