And I ate the haggis...

We ate at Maxies on a busy Friday night and found the service to be friendly and very helpful. Unfortuately, it was a bit rainy so we couldn't eat outdoors. But inside was comfortable and relaxed in spite of the crowd. We had the stir-fryed prawns and the salmon. Both were tasty and very... read more

We just happened upon this great restaurant by chance without previously planning to eat an early dinner...The outdoor tables were all occupied, so we walked around a bit and luckily found an open table on our trip back through - what a view from the garden terrace! Although the restaurant was full, we were greeted with prompt service. The food... More

They had a great looking outdoor eating area but it was cold and windy so we had to eat our lunch indoors. I went with a group of six people and some... More

Asked our hotel clerk for a dinner recommendation, and her recommended Maxies. Love the atmosphere, the comfy furniture and wonderful food and beverage. Good value for the price.

This was our second visit this year to Maxies - I'll be honest and say the first had its problems down to being very busy on the night we went. This time though it was amazing!!! The food on both visits was excellent!!! This times had the sea food linguine and was to die for with fresh clams. My husband... More

Had lunch outside on the terrace with a lovely view. Friendly, relaxed service. We ate delicious mussels in cream sauce and a smoked salmon salad.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
