We actually went into The Amber to sample two rare and wonderful whiskies that were recommended to us at the whisky shoppe upstairs. I was so pleased when they told us that we were in the tasting room so we would only be allowed a cold plate so as not to interfere with the rare and wonderful whisky aromas. If... More

I usually tend to avoid restaurants which are in locations such as the Royal Mile. That's because I think they are traps for tourists. Amber is not. The restaurant is modern, the food is valid and offers both sandwiches and regular dishes. Plus there's a beautiful whisky bar which I didn't take advantage of but looks .... "Scottish". Perfect for... More

We enjoyed lunch here. We had tasting platter which was good, lots of different Scottish dishes to try including haggis. Also had meat platter which was good too. Staff were very helpful and attentive. Huge range of whiskeys available to order also.

Amazing. Our first introduction to haggis and whisky. Our barman had extensive knowledge of the large selection of whiskys, great recommendations and drinking techniques The food was delicious and well presented. A brilliant first impression of the nation's "scary" main dish

At the top of the Royal Mile, near the Castle and hiding behind the advertising for the Whisky Experience is the Amber Restaurant. Easy to miss. A warm welcome is guaranteed, a lovely experience, well cooked and beautifully presented food served by a very happy team. Their enthusiasm is contagious. There is a short stair way down to the restaurant,... More

Expected this to be a real tourist trap, given its location, so only agreed to meet husband and sons here after they completed the Whisky Experience out of convenience. However I was pleasantly surprised and even came back two more times over our week in Edinburgh. There was a good range of food and an extensive whisky list. The food... More

Food was OK; service was appalling. It took 50 minutes from entering the restaurant to getting four sandwiches! Although we arrived at a busy time (1pm), there were several tables free. Nevertheless we were asked to wait in the bar area, and watched as a group which arrived after us (apparently without a reservation) was taken to a table before... More

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience in Amber. Firstly please allow me to say how sorry we are that our service appears to have fallen well short of our usual high standards. We are especially sorry that your guests from abroad received a poor impression of Amber. We would very much like to make amends as... More

We went there immediately after the Scotch Whiskey experience by a friend...who was quite high on the experience. The food was good.

Overall: definitely recommend the whisky experience, probably wouldn't recommend the 'taste of Scotland' meal as you can get similar / better local dishes elsewhere in town. My mother and I took the Platinum tour at the Scotch Whisky Experience, which was excellent. Neither of us are whisky drinkers, but felt it was the thing to do while in Scotland. We... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
