Pleasant meal at Waterloo Place

Very good British fare with good service in a pleasant bright and open space. We arrived around 7 pm (early for dinner in Edinburgh during the summer) without reservations, but they were able to seat us since the booked table was not reserved until over an hour later (they let us know of the time... read more

Tiny starter- salad and the bread tiny. Food was good quality, preparation OK. Berries and Chantelle cream terrific. A pleasant meal, not great.

First time visitor to Howie's and what a delightful surprise it was. I have been aware of their restaurants for years but this was, for some reason, our first visit. Top marks for food, service and wine, particularly the wine - well priced and slightly unusual but delicious selection. Lovely steak too.

Popped in on off change for meal on way to airport, knew the menu as been to Victoria restaurant previous days. Staff got our food through quickly so we weren't rushed so could leave in plenty of time for airport. Lovely building convenient for Carlton Hill.

Our first visit to Edinburgh to see the Military Tattoo. We were recommended to Howie's as being close to where we would pick up our coach by a local lady and it didn't disappoint. Whilst it is not the cheapest of eateries and was quite busy when we visited, the staff were very friendly and efficient. The wait for our... More

We dined here one lunchtime as a party of five. It was busy but the service was prompt and efficient. We tried the haggis, neeps and tatties, the cullen skink, the calamari, the catch of the day, the butternut squash tagine, and the howies beef burger. All starters and mains were delicious. However, the burger was a bit on the... More

My husband and I recently dined at Howies Waterloo with another couple. Howies Waterloo is in a beautiful historic building, with a very pretty atmosphere, located in a convenient location in Edinburgh. We were seated in a pretty corner table by the window with a lovely view, and we all enjoyed very nice meals, split a lovely dessert of Sticky... More

My partner and I had the two-course lunch set for £10.95, which was excellent value. We mainly went for the haggis, neeps and tatties, but the Cullen skink and roasted salmon were also delicious. The restaurant itself was bright and airy, carrying a sense of style throughout. Our lunch was relaxed and service polite and prompt. I would certainly go... More

Great staff who give polite service, fantastic food, good two course lunch time value. I would recommend this restaurant to friends, family and anyone visiting Edinburgh but would suggest you book a table as it's a very popular restaurant.

Very beautiful place, very welcoming waiters, a good service. However the food is expensive for what is it ... 4 slices of tomato a lime and few leaves of basil for 5.95£ very expensive.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
