Visited Howies yesterday for a birthday lunch with family and friends. The choices were amazing and such good value. Ranging from £8.95 -10.95 for a good quality 2 course lunch. I had veggie haggis for starter (as never managed it on burns night) then a really flavoursome spaghetti dish for my main (with mushroom, tarragon, cream, breadcrumbs)- I'd happily order... More

We visited this week for a quick lunch in my husbands lunch break from work. The service was excellent, very friendly and professional and the waiting staff very attentive, always filling up our water etc. I had hot smoked salmon to start which was delicious and my husband had cullen skink which I tasted too and will have next time.... 3 of us booked for dinner and had a lovely evening. The warm pigeon and black pudding salad starter was excellent. Had to send the soup of the day back as it looked watered down and was bland but the waiter was excellent and agreed it wasn't up to the usual standard and swapped it for Cullen skink which was... First, I found the decor to be intriguing! The restaurant is located in a former dancehall with a raised balcony where the band used to sit, tall Windows & a very high ceiling. Howie's has turned that space into a warm, welcoming experience. The menu is mainly Scottish and most items were reasonably priced. Each dish contained fresh seasonal ingredients,... More

Wonderful food, i had the casserole based on Kingas suggestion and was thoroughly impressed. Maeva and kinga did a great job of looking after myself and dinner companion keeping our glasses topped up and delivered great customer service. All the staff were very friendly, the bartender even took the time to mix a fine cocktail that wasn't on the menu.... More

Went here for the January winter Warner promotion. Cannot fault the food, service in general was good other than perhaps the staff being a bit too eager to collect our plates - can't say I blame them as the restaurant was very quiet when we were there. Nasty shock arrived when we got the bill - courses selected had to... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
