Excellent

Visited last night for dinner with a group of friends. I'm a fussy eater and wasn't really looking forward to it. However I was very pleasantly surprised! The food was excellent, the service was faultless. All 8 of us really enjoyed our meal and I would definitely go back!

Located at the foot of the incredible Calton Hill, Howies was a surprise. All of the menu items are locally sourced, very well prepared and, of all things, good for you! Portions are perfect, the service is outstanding, and the menu items are varied and offer beef, seafood and vegetarian options. But for dessert you simply have to try the... More

The restaurant was OK-Food was good, but the service was lacking. We were seated in the foyer of the restaurant because they were full-or they said they were-the dining room did not appear to be full. Even though they suggested eating in the foyer-they seemed to have forgotten about us.

I visited Howies for lunch on Sunday 12 July with a group of 5 friends to celebrate a birthday. I'd asked for a window seat and this request was met by the friendly manageress who showed us to our seats. Our lovely, smiley French waitress came with the menus, explained the specials on offer and brought a large ice bucket... More

Went to Howies for dinner with family on our first night in Edinburgh. Had the most delicious dinner, the tomato soup was excellent, both the fish and chicken dishes were cooked to perfection and the icing on the cake was the delicious banofee pie. Excellent service, friendly staff and great ambience. Highly recommended!

I liked the ramp to get in in a wheelchair, the friendly staff, the spacious accessible toilet and the delicious coffee. After being blown about on Carlton Hill, Howies was a warm and comfortable break from sight seeing.

We returned this year for our anniversary lunch. It was much busier this year as it was a Saturday so there were lots of groups in. Their BYO offer is definitely working as we were one of the few tables who didn't have their own wine with them. We had only arrived in Edinburgh so hadn't had a chance to... More

Service was good, place was nice, but honestly the food we had that day was pretty bad. Only reason I give it a 2 is because a 1 out of 5 rating is reserved for inedible stuff. The starters we had were mostly okay, but I thought the mains were pretty bad, especially for a restaurant so highly rated. The... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
