Excellent value, tasty and filling!

By no means is this a posh restaurant with waiter service but I would be hard pressed to get filling, hot and tasty food for under five pounds. That price gave me a choice of two vegetarian curries iwith rice in a warm restaurant on a rainy day. Both my husband and I were happy. The plates are... read more

This restaurant is something of a legend among students and locals in the Southside area of Edinburgh, and it's not hard to see why. It is situated about 10 mins walk out of the city from the Royal Mile on Nicholson Square and is open from 2 - 10pm most days. It is clean, keenly priced and don't be put... More

Tracked this eatery down in Nicholson Square, although a bit of a trek from high street the food was great, very reasonably priced, and the surrounding were immaculate. Large portion of Rogan Josh and Chicken Balti both with lots of rice £10. Also had a portion of ice cream 99p Hazlenut which was also impressive. Please try them it really... More

If you fancy something different then you should definitely checkout the Mosque Kitchen. Although mainly curry based food which is exceptionally tasty, there are other snack options also available. There are two locations but I would recommend the kitchen right next to the mosque as there is a better atmosphere. Sample price for full helping of curry and rice: £5.

Disposable cutlery, bowls and plates and wipe clean tables but very tasty food (enormous Nan bread - we had 2 amongst 5 of us) - chicken, lamb and vegetable curries and sides were all great

We had family visiting from England and decided to try something different and this was a huge success. Set within the grounds of the Edinburgh Mosque the canteen-style food was delicious and the vegetable pakora one of the best I've tasted. I'm told the samosa was equally good and the curries both meat and veg were without exception excellent and... More

Having visited a lot of posher eateries in Town I decided to try this, based on a recommendation ... So pleased I did. Food is served on disposable plates with plastic cutlery but the quantity/quality was fabulous. Choice of three out of six available veg curries with rice for £5!! There were also a few meat ones too. The curry... More

Came here upon recommendation and because it is cheap! Definitely worth a try! The curry was superb and filling! It was only 7.50 GBP between the two of us, we had the biriyani rice and lamb curry side. Good quick cheap eat in Edinburgh amongst all the other fancy restaurants unfit for students on a budge like us.

Reasonably priced curry with a good variety for veggies. I prefer the cafe next to the Mosque for setting but the curries are the same in both venues. I go here regularly!

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
