Description: Abbey Cottage is a family owned and run tearoom celebrating 30 years in business in 2013. We are delighted to receive a 'Top Tea Place' award from the Tea Council in April 2013. We offer coffees, light lunches and afternoon teas, sourcing ingredients locally, and even growing some ourselves. We have a good understanding of dietary issues and can offer gluten and lactose free menu options. Situated next to Sweetheart Abbey, in the shadow of Criffel and on the road to the coast.

Abbey Cottage bakes the most delicious scones, so fresh and light and baked on the premises as I believe all their bakes are (they have even published their own cook book!). They also offer an excellent range of speciality coffees. We sat outside in the sunny garden area with the stunning backdrop of Sweetheart Abbey. Staff are friendly and service... More

Hello, and thank you for your comments. Yes, we do our own baking, scones in the oven first, then the rest of the cakes later in the morning. Don't know if you had jam with your scone? That's homemade as well, with fruit from our home gardens, and also our generous neighbours who offer us their surplus! Hope you enjoy... More

The cakes at the Abbey Cottage are varied, tasty and have that freshness that only home baking on the premises can provide . I treated myself to a generous slice of the Chocolate Fudge Cake and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody else. Delicious! The cafe is both clean and tidy and all the staff members there... More

I had a similar experience here to another reviewer, arrived after advertised opening time but all locked up at front door on main road and no lights on. Went for a look round the ruins then came back. Went into the gift shop and was ignored despite trying to catch attention of woman. Walked into cafe area and was ignored.... More

Friendly staff, great food (in particular the smoked chicken) and the best meringue I've ever had! It is right next to Sweetheart Abbey so if you sit next to the window you have a lovely view while you eat.

This is the only cafe serving a fairly major tourist attraction (Sweetheart Abbey) so we expected it to be pricey. What we didn't expect however was the unexpected costs which we only realised when paying the bill. It is a nice cafe, very limited selection of cakes but hopefully this means they are fresh. We'd checked the opening time (10am)... More

Hello, it's taken me a little bit of time to respond to your review as I needed to make a few investigations. It seems that you tried to enter the tearoom via the doors from the garden. Although these look like ordinary french windows, they are in fact fire escape doors which can only be opened from the inside. When... More

This is a lovely tearoom alongside Sweetheart Abbey. There is outside seating as well as indoor, and it is all waitress service. A varied and interesting menu, with special dietary needs catered for (and not just as an afterthought). The GF lemon cheesecake was mouth watering. We enjoyed it so much we went twice.

Hello and thank you for your review. So pleased to hear that you enjoyed our GF food! We've got experience of food intolerances in our team, and know how difficult it can be to eat out enjoyably. Hope to see you again if you are in the area. More

Went here today with family from Glasgow for some light lunch and it was very tasty, fresh local produce which was very very tasty, our choices ranged from locally produced ham, salmon, pickle and free range eggs, all very delicious. We also had to try the baking, so traybakes and scones were purchased, all of these were freshly made and... More

Thank you so much for your review! We try to use local ingredients as much as possible. In fact, the free range eggs come from right here in New Abbey. We also use fruit and veg from our own gardens for the soup and jams. Seems like you enjoyed our baking too - lots of our family recipes in Home... More

Whilst travelling in Galloway and Dumfries we stopped in New Abbey to visit the old mill and to view Sweetheart Abbey. Next to the Abbey we discovered this delightful café where four of us enjoyed a home made lunch. Served by pleasant staff in a relaxed environment, we enjoyed the experience so much that we returned later in the week... More

Stopped off on our way to Castle Douglas for a short break. Convenient car parking and next to Sweetheart Abbey a Scottish Ancient monument. Staff friendly and welcoming, lovely cakes and the scones were excellent, great stop off place

Thank you so much for your feedback. We make our scones every morning, and the jam is made from fruit we grow in our own home gardens. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your short break in Castle Douglas. More
